💃 Today, on International Dance Day, I’m reflecting on the joy, passion and connection that dance brings, which feels especially meaningful to celebrate through recent work with young dancers.
This month, I had the privilege of producing the U.Dance North East Regional Platform at Dance City, where 119 incredible young dancers lit up the building with their energy and passion.
I first encountered U.Dance during my time as Dance Development Manager at @the_efdss, when part of my role was to weave youth folk dance into this huge, exciting celebratory process that exists to champion young dancers. This ignited a passion for youth dance in me and so over the years at the U.Dance National Festivals, folk dance was introduced through clog workshops, rapper sword and morris demonstrations, and lunchtime ceilidhs - that strand quickly became the highlight of my time at EFDSS! So I was delighted when I got the role at Dance City as Engagement Manager to discover that I would be producing the North East Regional Platform event, a lovely full circle moment!
I came away from the event beaming with pride at all of the young dancers and their group leaders, this is why we do what we do and we must keep championing dance!
Dance truly connects us, and today feels like the perfect moment to celebrate all of those amazing dancers, teachers, parents and carers carrying it forward and making it happen!

✨ What a treat we had today at @missfitdanceandfitness - a Cha Cha Cha masterclass with the incredible Strictly legend @grazianodiprima @dancingwithgraz 🤩
It was such an amazing class, really great to break a dance style down which I’m not experienced in and learn a new technique - my clog dancer straight hips need some work with the wiggle!
Graziano was such a wonderful teacher, really engaging and motivational 🫶🏻 and who doesn’t like dancing to Prince?!! 🕺🏻
Thank you Tanya for organising this and for letting Matilda meet her favourite male Strictly pro 💖

🎶 I had a little trip up to the Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering today to support the relaunch of the annual clog dance competitions. I still felt that nervous tightening in my stomach entering the beautiful Town Hall Ballroom where the competitions have taken place for so many years, it must be over 20 years since I danced on that stage!!
I remembered how hard I used to practise before a clog championship and how great it felt when the hard work paid off and your name was announced as the champion! That determination never left me and I will still “drill” steps right until the last minute whether I’m about to perform clog or teach a Zumba class!
Today I learnt that this event is now the only competition remaining which recognises Northumbrian clog dance and that’s a shame. There were three fabulous dancers competing today, there should be more! The audience was busy so there is clearly an enthusiasm to watch clog dance, I’m pondering what it is about competition that is putting dancers off? 🤔
I’m feeling a call out for clog dancers coming on….🫶🏻
It was wonderful to see a lot of my old clog teachers there and of course my old marra @stewarthardymusic providing the music 🎶
Huge congratulations to the competition winners, I really loved watching your dancing💖 @hadrianclog

✨ I'm absolutely delighted with this photo taken by the fantastic @joannecoates_ for the @wowglobal Hope Brigade North East exhibition, currently on display outside @gala_durham and at @locomotionshd.
When I discovered I was going to be featured in the exhibition, Jo asked me to select a meaningful location for the photoshoot. It was easy to choose @beamish_museum, a place filled with fond memories of my time as Music and Dance Officer and clog dancing in the Pit Village.
Visiting the exhibition on Mother's Day in Durham was a treat, it was lovely to see my fellow Hope Brigaders' photos on display!

On this day in 1843, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was first published and its festive spirit is still going strong in the @fenwickofficial Christmas Window!
What a joy it was to work with Fenwick as Dance Producer and performer for the 2025 Christmas Window Reveal! This year’s magical windows, created by artist @chris_riddell and inspired by A Christmas Carol, were brought to life through the vision and talent of so many wonderful people – the display looks truly magical.
I was delighted to work with @reezannkirkbride Creative Director and Producer, who entrusted me with this dream role. What an absolute inspiration she is! ❤️
Thank you to the incredible dancers who joined me wholeheartedly on this secret festive mission! It’s always a treat to dance alongside my longstanding cloggie pal @tinyclogs, who I’ve danced with for over two decades with @breakingtradition, as well as @james_therobot from @sincru, @bgirlpetitfilou and @chris_bankc of @bustamoveleeds and @breakingtradition, and I was absolutely delighted to collaborate and dance with @branmallipal for the first time. Such a talented bunch.⭐
It was a true pleasure meeting @voxpopulisingers, whose music gave me goosebumps in every rehearsal, and @umar_productions for his captivating storytelling. Big appreciation also to @mattbaileymedia who did a fantastic job energising the crowds before the dancing began.
Special shout-out to @madebybea.m for making us shine – even in Victorian costume! (Something @tinyclogs and I have managed to avoid until now...) 😉
Final thanks to the fantastic @kirkjohnbride for capturing these beautiful moments during both our dress run and the live event. Working alongside this brilliant team has been genuinely inspiring; feeling very lucky and grateful to have been part of it all.
“In the words of Tiny Tim: ‘A Merry Christmas to us all; God bless us, everyone!’”🎄

🎄 It’s not officially Christmas until I’ve done some Christmas clogging at @beamish_museum 🎶
Always love the atmosphere, it’s like a mini folk festival in the Pit Village Band Hall!
(This reel shows footage from this year and last year and features Hexham Morris Men and Hexhamshire Lasses who I used to dance with many moons ago!)

Today was our final clog club session and we celebrated with a trip to @beamish_museum to perform for the whole school, families and visitors.
The children were absolutely amazing, they performed with such pride and confidence. 🌟
Thank you @dance_city_newcastle for inviting me to be part of this special project and thank you to @communityfoundationnortheast who look after a special fund dedicated to North East musical traditions. With this fund the children have a made a connection to the area they live in which is steeped in mining history and to the special dance tradition which grew out of that time.
Huge thanks also to Bill Elliott, my old marra who volunteered to come and play guitar and sing, and Chloe who accompanied brilliantly on her fiddle, so lovely to partner with @newcastleuni Folk and Traditional Music Degree Course and @catriona.macdonald.18 too, being a student on this course 20 years ago is where I began to discover where folk music and dance sits in our local schools and communities - how important it is to the culture of the North East and how to go about teaching clog dance workshops in various settings. A lovely full circle moment!
