Nota importante sobre o show do ÁVUÁ no Festival

Due to the extremely high demand for the ÀVUÁ concert, and in order to ensure safety and access for the different audiences attending Festival Masculinidades, tickets for the concert will be distributed separately from the festival’s general programme, in line with the venue’s maximum capacity.

The total capacity for the concert is 1,000 people. Tickets to Avuá’s concert will be open to the general public for free via Sympla from 10am on Monday, 25 May 2026.

Important: tickets for the full Festival Masculinidades daytime programme, running until 6pm, will continue to be available through the general Sympla festival link. A separate ticket will only be required for access to the ÀVUÁ concert.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding regarding these access and capacity arrangements, and we recommend securing tickets early due to the high demand.

Meet the Changemakers!

The Changemakers collaborate across eight action tracks, each focused on a critical area for change.

This is The Power of Story track.

Policy change is essential, but long-term social change also depends on culture, storytelling, and the ability to engage people through shared experiences. Stories shape how people understand identity, relationships, equality, care, and belonging. They can challenge assumptions, shift attitudes, and create space for new perspectives.

Led in partnership with WOW – Women of the World, this track brings together artists, researchers, advocates, cultural leaders, educators, and storytellers to explore how creative practice can support gender equality and caring masculinities across communities and generations.

Through a year-long programme connected to the MenCare Changemaker Summit, WOW is working with Changemakers and the wider public in Rio and beyond to develop a global festival methodology focused on boys and men. The goal is to create participatory spaces that encourage dialogue, exchange ideas across borders, and connect research, advocacy, activism, policy, business, and the arts through storytelling and lived experience.

As part of the Summit, WOW will convene artists in residence and create opportunities for Changemakers to experience the role culture and storytelling can play in driving social change.

What stories, cultural experiences, or creative spaces have most shaped the way you think about gender, care, and community?

Cuidar transforma.
***
What if caring manhood was the norm? What If we built the world to promote caring manhood? What is that started here? What if that started now? What if we found joy in finding the solutions?

Men around the world tell us they find their greatest happiness and purpose in care. It's time to unleash that force into the world. Into workplaces. Into cities. Into schools? Into health systems. Into parliaments. Into online spaces.

Care is political. Care is the solution. Care is contagious.

Meet the Changemakers!

The Changemakers collaborate across eight action tracks, each focused on a critical area for change.

This is the Democracy, Violent Extremism & Tech-Enabled Harms track.

In many parts of the world, growing numbers of men are becoming oppositional to gender equality and more likely to support authoritarian leaders, extremist movements, and polarized political narratives. At the same time, many young men are becoming increasingly disconnected from civic participation and community life, while representing the majority of those engaged in backlash activism and extremist violence.

This track brings together researchers, policymakers, technologists, educators, advocates, and civic leaders working to better understand these trends and develop responses that strengthen democratic participation, rebuild trust, reduce polarization, and engage young men in positive and pro-social ways.

The work focuses on addressing the social, political, and digital conditions that contribute to extremism and division, while identifying solutions that support healthier forms of belonging, dialogue, leadership, and civic engagement.

What do you think is needed to rebuild trust, strengthen civic life, and reduce polarization in communities today?

The S.M.I.L.E-ing Boys in Maré workshops took place in the aftermath of the deadliest police operation in Rio’s history – events that directly affected many of the young people involved.

In a world where Black boys are so often represented through violence and dehumanisation, Kay Rufai’s project creates space for something else: humanity, tenderness, reflection and joy.

Watch Ray, 18, speak about the impact the project had on him and his community ahead of the premiere of S.M.I.L.E-ing Boys in Maré at the WOW Boys and Men Festival Rio 🇧🇷

What happens when Black boys are centred not through trauma, but through their humanity?

As part of the WOW Boys and Men Festival Rio, award-winning artist Kay Rufai premieres S.M.I.L.E-ing Boys in Brazil for the first time 🇧🇷

Created with Brazilian artists Math de Araújo and Diego Reis, the project placed cameras into the hands of young Black men and boys from Maré to capture their own lives, friendships and communities on their own terms.

Developed in the aftermath of the deadliest police operation in Rio’s history, the project became a space for expression through photography, poetry and storytelling.

Showing smiling Black boys in a context where they are so often framed through violence and dehumanisation becomes something powerful: an act of resistance.

The full exhibition premieres at the Boys and Men Festival in Rio on 29 May. Details at the link in bio.
