Artists are the heartbeat of California’s vibrancy, innovation, and cultural richness, yet the state ranks just 35th nationwide in per-capita arts funding. Institutions like the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture @thecheechcenter play a vital cultural role by providing space for the continued exhibition, scholarship, and dialogue that connect Chicano and Mexican American art and expression to the cultural fabric of what characterizes California stories. ⁠

A $50 million investment will help sustain cultural landmarks like the Cheech. If we want thriving communities and to lead with diversity, we need help to increase arts funding to $50 million.⁠

We depart here at one end of the Metro link red line. Often the beginning of the trek towards Los Angeles, the train ride is only an hour and a half journey. Here, only freight resides as passenger trains fulfill their daily routes. For some, this is an area of arrival, for others, a platform for departure. Very fortunate to call this home.

Minimal Video Game Creation is a hands-on workshop that introduces participants to creating small interactive games using accessible, open source tools. No prior experience is required. During the session, participants will create a short playable game while exploring simple mechanics, narrative, and visual composition.

Led by UCR Gluck Fellows Nico Valdivia Hennig and Johanna Nieto, the workshop emphasizes accessibility, experimentation, and the possibility of making games with minimal technical resources.

👥 Limited capacity, first come first served basis.

The workshop starts at 1:00 PM, and registered spots will be held until 1:15 PM in case it reaches capacity.

CHEECH IV closes this Sunday, 5/3!

Curated by Maria Esther Fernández, this fourth iteration of Cheech Collects, showcases more works from Cheech Marin’s landmark gift to the Riverside Art Museum’s permanent collection.

New additions by Carlos Almaraz, Jaime Guerrero, and Narsiso Martínez are among those joining over 100 pieces by 40+ artists on view; with a focus on pastels and recent acquisitions to The Cheech Center Collection.

Riverside Art Museum and The Cheech are dedicated to ensuring accessibility for all through a range of free, reduced-cost, and general admission ticket options.
We are part of the Museums for All program, offering $1 tickets for up to four people. Just show your ID and EBT card to visitor services when you arrive. There are no blackout dates or restrictions.

Children under the age of 12 are always free.
