Me as Subcommandate Marcos, holding a Palestinian Flag after Gillian Wearing, 2024 on slidefilm assisted by@los_mperez . In Miriam Haddu’s essay titles Beyond the mask: image-making, resistance and photography in Chiapas. Miriam states the sense of wariness towards the camera when Zapatistas came into the spotlight in 1994, Marcos knew the implication of the photograph. Especially for indigenous people. “Over the last decade this awareness has led to the gradual appropriation of the process of image-making on behalf of the photographed subject. In similar vein, this process has become recognized as an important politicized stance which has been adopted by members of the Zapatista movement in their efforts to re-appropriate the image and thus a sense of autonomy.” This was also an outtake of another image made but decided to include the Palestinian flag as a connection for to what being masked up with a keffiyehis suppose to do, bring a sense or autonomy and as well as a connection to the EZLN unwavering support for Palestinian Liberation. If the history of photography has taught me anything is that photo can be a tool for oppression but as well as tool that can reimagine autonomy to oppressed communities. The image can be a weapon. As Gillian has photographed herself as icons of photography lets not forget the impact that the Zapatistas have done in the field of photography. #largeformat #4x5 #slidefilm #chicanxart #latinxphotography

re posted from @newyorkermag Today, Anaheim is best known as the home of Disneyland and the Los Angeles Angels. The photographer William Camargo (@billythecamera) recovers the city’s Indigenous and Mexican past and present by standing at seemingly unremarkable sites where he holds up signs that tell an alternative history. See more of his photographs at the link in our bio. #chicanx #contemporaryart #contemporaryphoto
Also who wants to show a good amount of the signage works in their institution? lol. Still currently in nyc finishing my residency at @penumbrafoundation working on a full monograph slated to come out next yr:)

William Camargo’s All That I Can Carry at @hannahsloan_curatorial

William Camargo (@billythecamera) is a Southern California based artist who uses photography to examine the world around him — specifically looking at racism, gentrification, and how the city of Anaheim (where he grew up) ignores its indigenous history.

Camargo does not simply document before and after, but uses himself and people he encounters (from different neighborhoods) in an ongoing dialogue about displacement. The exhibition includes images from series created between 2019 and the present.

Camargo is at once a visual artist, community archivist and educator who examines "structures of erasure." He states, "I continue to negotiate with placemaking, belonging, and constructed borders. For this reason, I use my brown body, born and raised in Anaheim, to conduct these interventions. I use historical texts and contemporary stories to establish a connection in which the same injustices are repackaged through language and neoliberal policies."

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening of William Camargo: All That I Can Carry. The gallery was packed with artists, educators, collectors, and curators moving through the space, engaging with the work. It was our most well-attended opening to date, and the energy carried all the way from the front gallery to the patio, where we shared stories over tacos, adding to the good vibes and lively, generous atmosphere.

We’re especially grateful to those who purchased copies of William’s book—which sold out!—and to everyone who spent time with the work, from the curated bookshelf presentation to the floor installation.

We’re also delighted to share that key works from the exhibition are finding strong homes in public and private collections.

The exhibition remains on view through May 30 with a closing reception and group Artist Talk on Saturday May 30 at 11am—we welcome you to spend time with us in the weeks ahead.
