Traveled to South Texas to participate in Gloria Anzaldua’s El Retorno. The depiction of the Virgin Mary in visual art is a tradition stretching back almost 2,000 years. Her popularity over the centuries is well represented by many artworks in the Getty Museum, but Mary also continues to inspire contemporary artists. In this conversation, participants draw out the enduring appeal of this figure who serves as both an icon of compassionate devotion and cultural celebration, or an emblem of religious tradition and oppression to critique. Exploring why contemporary artists remain attracted to the many symbolisms of the Virgin Mary helps us understand how a visual theme that originated in the Middle Ages still has resonance today. Complements the exhibition Visualizing the Virgin Mary. Moderated by Patrick Polk, presenters include Harmonia Rosales, Mark Mahoney and me.

After vaccine, its reassuring to know that I won’t possibly unknowingly spread COVID-19 virus to family, friends and community.
I received my vaccine at UCLARonald Reagan on March 11, 2021. Pre pandemic lockdown photos with Alicia and Azul at Tamales Liliana’s and Rudy’s Barbershop.

Vaccine at UCLA’s Ronald Reagan on March 11, 2021. Pre-pandemic lockdown photos at Tamales Liliana’s and Rudy’s Barbershop with Alicia and Azul.
I have to admit that while I was in line for vaccine, I kept thinking about the Twilight Zone episode where really tall beings from outer space invite earthlings to their planet.
As earthlings board spaceships, a scientist yells a warning, “their book titled TO SERVE MAN is a recipe book!”
My nature is to doubt and question. But I am glad that I was able to get the one shot vaccine. I am looking forward to seeing friends and family without wondering if we may be getting each other sick.

La Llorona Desperately Seeking Coyolxauhqui in Juarez serigraph produced at Sam Coronado Studio in Austin, Texas, 2003.
This was my first print at Coronado Studios and the first print I’ve done that I felt successfully combined photography based digital with silkscreen.
This print is a study in pink focusing on the femicides on the U.S.-Mexico border which unfortunately continue today.
The second image is of the 8 foot high altar installation at Trópico de Nopal Gallery, Los Angeles.
Third image is the conference poster at UCLA organized by Alicia Gaspar De Alba.
Fourth image is a poster designed to bring attention to these awful torture crimes. The poster titled I was inspired by the detective novel Desert Blood by Alicia Gaspar De Alba.
Last image is the book of the conference proceedings with the cover of my La Llorona print edited by Alicia Gaspar De Alba with her then graduate student, Georgina Guzman.
