The first Devotions poetry night will be taking place on 13 July, Sunday at Next Door Records 2 in Stoke Newington.

This month, we’re focusing on the theme of SURRENDER. From aspirations, wishes, pleasures, freedoms, joys, loves, and cravings, this season is about relinquishing control and yielding to the unknown.

We’ll be sharing and cultivating evocative, raw, honest work. Guest performers will be reading their poems on the night, followed by an open mic for everyone who is moved to share.

Devotions is a poetry project guided by a spirit of delight, play, openness, and curiosity. Each cycle of Devotions celebrates a chosen theme, featuring performances from writers, artists, and musicians from all walks of life. Everyone is welcome.

As artists, we are dedicated to making poetry and art accessible. We see poetry as a moving expression of emotions, perceptions, and experiences, and accordingly encourage creativity and vulnerability in its approach. Our aim here is to provide a platform for people to play, create, release, and celebrate.

Each theme manifests in a live event and some creative material on our socials surrounding the subject: recommended reading, favourite films, playlists, and visual inspiration.

ʀᴇᴀᴄʜɪɴɢ ꜰᴏʀ ᴍᴇ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴅᴀʀᴋ

Strange Dreams was inspired by something that was happening to me in real time — both as I was recording it and again six months later, during its release. It’s about the pain of longing you experience after a big heartbreak, where you feel like something that was once so real and so close to you is gone, and you can only touch it again as a memory in your dreams.

But energy doesn’t disappear, it only transforms. Years ago I came across a quote that read, “Don’t grieve! Anything you lose comes round in another form.” I have found that to be true. Whatever magic I was grieving during this period, I soon realised I had already brought here myself. I redirected that energy into the work I was making, and followed the music as I slowly found my way back to myself.

This song served as a visceral snapshot of that moment in time, living inside my own song like one long strange fever dream: a year of pursuing a long-forgotten ambition under intense circumstances, falling in and out of love, and surrendering to heartbreak.

For these reasons, Strange Dreams will always have a special place in my heart. It was my first big step forward at a time where it felt like my life was falling apart, before I even truly believed in myself or thought that I could actually make anything happen. At the time of its release last summer, I felt like I was losing my mind. A year later, my life has drastically changed shape, and I can see everything clearly. I’m so glad it gets a second life with this video.
