We’re thrilled to welcome Juilliard alum Jamal Callender as the Dance Division’s new associate dean and director! Beginning July 1, Jamal returns to Juilliard, following a distinguished performance career across the U.S. and Europe. He brings extensive experience in teaching, performance, and leadership, with a strong commitment to mentorship, dance education, and cultural exchange through tuition-free training. Alongside dean and director Melissa Toogood and the Dance Division faculty, Jamal will help shape Juilliard dancers to become ever more versatile, collaborative, and forward-thinking artists.

21 years ago, I started my journey at the Juilliard School as a student.

21 years later, I’m back… in a different capacity, but still holding on to the curiosity and spirit of being a student.

It feels incredible to be home again in New York City after 11 years away.

Let’s do this

LDIF 2026 reminded me that this festival feels more like a family reunion, led by Auntie Pawlet @serendipityinstituteuk .

Being invited back to teach another masterclass was truly a jam.

That’s the culture, love, and mission LDIF carries.

Seeing friends and dance colleagues from the US, UK, Africa, and across the Caribbean has been incredible. Family reunion is the best way I can describe it.

During class, I felt compelled to create on the spot to “Jack” (Dah Beach Is Mine) by the great Barbadian calypsonian Mighty Gabby, a song that speaks to the attempted privatization of Barbados beaches in 1982 by foreigners, immigrants to the country.

The beach is for all of we!

Between traveling to Madrid to shoot a commercial and pushing through HYROX-style hybrid training this week, my lower back started to feel it!!

That’s when I realized I hadn’t done any Pilates all week. Funny how quickly the body notices when it’s missing its medicine.

Here I am moving through a boomerang into crab.

It has been such a pleasure teaching and sharing at @iabarcelona @contemporarydanceiab IAB for the 8th year. This time I had the chance to teach ballet, improv, contemporary and even Pilates.
These students are true sponges, always curious and excited to learn.

On my last day we created this little phrase that turned into a nugget. In just one hour we played and experimented.
Keep that curiosity alive and remember the studio is always a lab for questions and going deeper into the work
