It’s official! 🤗 🫶🏽✨💫

Shaaghan Neekwaii (Two Old Women) is premiering at the 2025 #HawaiiInternationalFilmFestival, as part of the Indigenous Shorts Film Program!

This narrative short film - based on the traditional Gwich'in story and best-selling book by author Velma Wallis, has touched hearts and minds for over 30 years. The short film is entirely in Dinjii Zhuu K'yaa (the Gwich'in language) and features Brenda Kay Newman as Ch'idzigyaak and Margaret Henry John as Sa' and has a special appearance by Chief Galen Gilbert of Vashraii K'oo.

This film would not have come to fruition without the many Gwich'in community members that made it possible with their love, prayers, lived experience and creativity! For that we are forever grateful. Our dream is to continue this work and make the full feature film.

Last week, I was able to visit Juneau and listen to Rep. Nellie Unangik Jimmie speak firmly for the need to extend emergency funding for Western Alaska - the hundreds of residents who have been displaced by the climate crisis (it passed). As an Alaska Native woman, I felt a sense of pride seeing my sister-in-law (who is also my representative of District 31 in Fairbanks)- @rep_maxine_dibert pass her first bill and Rep. Robyn Niayuq Burke all navigating the challenging, sometimes impossible work of enacting laws and setting state budgets. I am grateful to them and all who are doing their best under very stressful circumstances.

Additionally, I was moved to tears listening this week to Rep. Ruffridge give powerful testimony “enough is enough!’ bringing attention to the on-going issue of our Murdered & Missing Indigenous Women & Girls and Mahsi’choo to @dataforindigenousjustice & Antonia Commack and the many who have comprised the grassroots efforts & the cry for justice over decades.
