Jeremy Collins
Eventually A Sequoia

This drawing of mine is a few years old now and I think of it as a message from a previous version of myself. To me it’s two totally different contemplations. 1. It’s good to remember what we wanted out of life, and 2. it’s also ok to (attempt to) change that vision. Change is terrifying. And constant. I ask my kids what they want to be when they grow up and listen to their answer knowing full well it will change often. /// For me, I’m on the bridge between the two: I’m not who I thought I wanted to be while trying to figure out who I want to be next. It’s tricky being okay with that. It can be... debilitating. It’s a scary or hopeful place depending on which direction you allow yourself to face.

🌊⛵️🌊
Are you weary?
Are you worn?
Holes in your vessel,
Your sails torn?
Is the storm ever-raging?
Are you tossed overboard?
•
Well-
All is not lost, captain;
All is not sunk.
All is not buried..
In the sea...
In a trunk.
•
For-
Fierce storms form
seasoned sailors.
and If you’re still afloat,
You’re not a failure.
And although you're afraid... perhaps by choices you’ve made;
Remember;
This will not be your last escapade.
•
There will be more to endure-
With bigger waves,
And hidden rocks.
You'll lose sight of the shore,
And
Submerge all your docks.
•
As-
The worst has not come,
Nor the best,
Nor the end,
Nor the darkest,
Nor the deepest
you’ll ever descend
•
So-
Rise to the ready,
SHAKE YOUR FIST
(With your heart)
To pass through the storm,
Cast-off now, and depart.

Instructions on how to draw:
✍🏽 Step one- stop trying to be good at drawing. Try to be better at seeing.
✍🏽 Step two- quit comparing yourself to others. No one needs that baggage. It’s okay to say “I want to be as good as her or him or them” but ideally your goal will be to simply enjoy the act of drawing and if you continue enjoying the discipline eventually craftsmanship and maybe even mastery will follow. It’s just lines and shapes, not our identity and worth.
✍🏽 Step three- realize that you will draw better when you care deeply about the subject you are drawing. Even if that means you simply care deeply about craftsmanship. That’s a GREAT thing to care about. To draw well, care about something. Aliens. Robots. Public lands. Anything.
✍🏽 Step four- try various materials- Bristol, watercolor paper, lined, unlined, pencils, pens, dipping ink, blood, coffee beans. Try it all until you find what feels like an extension of your own body- as if the tool is growing right out of your hand. And if you never have that feeling, then just use whatever is closest when inspiration hits. Don’t get obsessed with finding some magic wand tool to make your drawings better.
✍🏽 Step five- drawing is for EVERYBODY. At some point in middle school we all are segregated into our natural skill sets. The artists make art, the athletes make baskets and the nerds make money. But I guarantee you drawing is something EVERYONE can enjoy and get better at. It’s just a skill.
✍🏽 Step six- Slow down. This is really my only advice. Everyone is in such a hurry to be satisfied. If you find your rendering is getting sloppy at some point relative to the beginning of a drawing, then put it to the side and return later. Unless it’s supposed to be sloppy. Then just keep that sloppiness consistent.

I’m a sucker for my iPhone and Facebook “memories feature”.
Today, 9 years ago-
Shot 1:@austin_siadak on Lurking Fear, El Capitan, Yosemite. Our first time climbing together; car-to-car 18 hrs.
Shot 2: Austin and I meeting up at 4am wearing the exact same head to toe @patagonia outfit. So #influenced
Shot 3: Today, 10 years ago climbing Drifting, Red Rock Canyon, Nevada with @ljsauter . I remember she had to wear a full face covered mask with ointment the entire day due to severe sunburns from Peru. We still laughed and climbed well but I never saw her face the entire day 🥹😆
Shot 4: 12 years ago today- climbing another great sport line in Missouri- “Simple Math”; researching for my first guidebook to the state. This shot was by photographer Jim Grace but @andrew_burr was shooting from the opposite angle at the same time. We used both.

Seven months, 3000 miles, 21 new routes, endless bushwhacking, two kayaks stolen, crags no one’s ever heard of and 500 routes that have never been in print (!!).
The Eastern Missouri chapter to my next edition is WRAPPED!
I Still have a little room left for advertisers. Who should we add? Tag ‘em. Are you a climbing brand or a regional business that wants to have a billboard in climbers backpacks and shelves for the next 20 years?.

Thank you to all the Eastside climbers for their incredible support and help getting things right! And thanks to my partners who shared ropes and campsites and labor!

Terrapin’s soul is rooted in Northern California’s stunning natural beauty. Honoring that, we’re excited to announce we’ve joined non-profit environmental organization@1percentftp.
Founded in 2002 by Patagonia’s Yvon Chouinard and his fishing buddy Craig Mathews, 1% for the Planet certifies and verifies that its members donate 1% or more of total revenue to environmental non-profits. With nearly a billion dollars raised thus far, 1% for the Planet doesn’t dictate who members give money to, so long as recipients pass a vetting process ensuring they’re above board.
Who should we support?
We have some ideas, but we’d love to hear which local environmental orgs are near and dear our community’s heart. We want this to be inclusive, so please comment / tag in the comments!
Also stoked to finally reveal this new Terrapin graphic from our friend @jer.collins featuring Mount Tam and the Bay Area’s iconic fog.

What if…
My friends at @farmtocrag partnered with @outwardwines and we put art on bottles and infused it with awareness of how climbers could be more conscientious of their travel spending habits and how they move through the planet, and eat and consume and climb and enjoy life sustainably?
What if?
What a collaboration. ❤️

Ten years ago today this short from @gopro raised almost 100k for earthquake victims in Nepal. Shot by and with @nicgreece @jamesqmartin @isabellamessenger @karmaflights and @thecloudbasefoundation
It was a stunt that took no rehearsal and no real skill on my part other than staying engaged with no true purpose other than the curiosity if we could do it. We launched from around 13,000’ and drifted to a rice field then hitchhiked back to Pokhara.

Have you watched the first episode of The Dark Wizard on @hbomax yet? Dean Potters story might leave you inspired, terrified, repulsed or all of the above.
To some, he was an extreme athlete to admire from afar. For the filmmakers and friends who watched his daredevil artistic experiments up close it was… complicated. He wasn’t called the dark wizard for nothing.
Then there was our relationship which was far simpler: Mutual respect as artists and friends. Dean and I worked on a series of animations together telling the story of many of his closest calls and those of friends of his that didn’t make it. When @hbomax and @senderfilms took on the task of telling his story, they asked me to revive the drawings and animations we did back then. I was resistant. It felt like opening a dark book I had closed and put away. In the end, I felt like Dean would’ve been proud to see these images come back to life telling his full story.
The series is in my opinion: honest, terrifying and like Dean- mythic. There has been no one like Dean and there willnever be another like him.
Be prepared with tissues, a blanket to hide under, and a chalk bag. Dean challenges us all to ask of ourselves: what rules of society or self inflicted lack of belief are holding me back? His answer was always- “absolutely none”. However, beyond the madness that made him magical, he was also kind, soft and generous and we will miss him forever.
The Dark Wizard is streaming weekly on HBO Max.
