As the opening chapter of the Chitwan to Lo-Manthang (C2L) Himalayan Transect 2026, our first day in Chitwan introduced participants to the rich biodiversity, indigenous culture, and human-nature relationships of Nepal’s tropical lowlands.

Led under the vision of professor Dr. Brian McAdoo from Duke Nicholas School of the Environment and Duke Planet Lab, the multidisciplinary field program brings together students and researchers from USA, China, Nepal, and Pakistan to explore climate change, conservation, ecology, and community resilience from the Terai to the Himalayas.

The day began with visits to Chitwan National Park headquarters in Kasara, including presentations on conservation management, biodiversity protection, and the challenges faced by protected areas in the era of climate change.

Participants also explored the Gharial Crocodile Breeding Center and experienced bird watching and jungle safari activities inside the national park.
The wilderness offered unforgettable wildlife encounters, including a rare sloth bear, 14 endangered one-horned rhinoceroses, herds of spotted deer, Magar and Gharial crocodiles, elephants, and over 30 species of birds.

A meaningful cultural and livelihood learning experience followed with a visit to the indigenous Bote, the fishing community at Bankatta in neighboring Madi Municipality. The Bote Community Homestay warmly hosted the team with traditional local meals and guided village tours that allowed participants to closely observe the community’s daily life, fishing-based livelihood, relationship with rivers and forests, and the challenges faced by indigenous communities in changing environmental conditions.

The interaction highlighted how local and indigenous knowledge systems remain deeply connected to sustainability, natural resources, and climate resilience.

Special thanks to Birendra Chaudhari for facilitating and coordinating the field activities with deep commitment to conservation and community engagement.

Day 1 of the Himalayan Planetary Health Transect — Lalitpur
14th May 2026
Welcome, Orientation & Grounding
The 2026 Himalayan Planetary Health Transect brings together students from @dukeuniversity , @dukekunshan , and universities across Nepal for a 14-day journey from the subtropical lowlands of Chitwan to the high-altitude plateau of Lo Manthang — witnessing firsthand how environmental change shapes health and ecosystems across some of the world’s most dramatic ecological gradients.

🌏 Day 1 set the foundation. Students were welcomed by partners from Duke, Duke Kunshan, @karmaflights, Asian Mountain Academic Alliance, @ihrrnepal , and FEED. Brian McAdoo opened the intellectual chapter of the day — introducing students to the framework of Planetary Health and the interconnected systems they would be observing across every altitude and ecosystem ahead.

📷 Tom White then handed them a different kind of lens: Photojournalism 101, challenging students to document not just what they see, but what it means — with peer portraits as their first live assignment.

🪨Sanjaya Devkota painted a vivid portrait of Nepal’s extraordinary tapestry of cultures, peoples, geographies, and ecosystems — a country that contains multitudes, and one the students were about to traverse from south to north.

🗺️ Sujeev Shakya then brought that into sharper focus with Nepal 101, grounding students in the social and geographic context they’d be moving through.

🏘️From there, Anil Chitrakar led a heritage walk through Patan Durbar Square — weaving together culture, conservation, governance, and social change.

Happy Dhaulagiri Summit Day!

Today, KarmaTreks & Adventure proudly honors the legendary Dhaulagiri (8,167m)—the majestic giant of western Nepal and a timeless symbol of courage, exploration, and Himalayan pride.
On 13 May 1960, Dhaulagiri was first successfully summited by the historic Swiss-Austrian expedition led by Max Eiselin, marking a remarkable chapter in mountaineering history. Since then, this magnificent peak has continued to inspire adventurers, trekkers, and mountain communities from around the world.
From the heart of Mudi to the high Himalayan passes, Dhaulagiri represents not only breathtaking beauty but also the resilience, culture, and spirit of Nepal’s mountain people.
At KarmaTreks & Adventure, we celebrate this incredible legacy by promoting responsible adventure, sustainable mountain tourism, and meaningful connections with the Himalayas.
Here’s to the climbers, guides, local communities, and dreamers who continue to walk beneath the shadow of this extraordinary mountain.
Honor the mountain. Respect the journey. Celebrate the legacy.

International Red Cross and Red Crescent Day – May 8

On this special day, KarmaFlights Foundation extends heartfelt respect and gratitude to all humanitarian organizations, volunteers, frontline workers, and supporters in Nepal and around the world who serve humanity with compassion, dignity, and hope.

We deeply value the inspiring work of the Nepal Red Cross Society, especially Nepal Red Cross Society Kaski, with whom we are proudly collaborating to bring clean and safe drinking water to the communities of Arnakot.

For the second time, we are working together to strengthen the Arnakot Lifting Water Project—a meaningful partnership that reflects our shared belief that access to clean water is a basic human right and a foundation for healthier, stronger communities.

Special thanks to Nisikhola Rural Municipality and Unica Foundation for their generous support and shared humanitarian vision.

Together, through compassion and collaboration, we continue to uplift lives—one community at a time.

Happy Buddha Purnima from the land of Buddha, Lumbini, Nepal! On this sacred day, we honor the teachings of peace, compassion, and balance. At KarmaFlights, we live by the law of karma: as you give, so shall you receive, and trust that everything is working out perfectly (EWOP) when you do good Karma.
By coincidence today, we also celebrate International Workers’ Day and the vibrant Ubhauli festival of the Kirant community—marking the seasonal migration, honoring nature, ancestors, and the rhythm of life. It is a reminder of harmony between people and the natural world, something we deeply value in our journey of good Karma.
May this day inspire peace, purpose, and positive action across the world.
