When The Body Remembers
In solidarity with women, with children, with people of color; with all who rose against oppression, who gave their lives, who go on giving still… the martyrs… the silenced, the powerless…
The body remembers. The memory endures.
One dies only when forgotten,
we will never let you die.

Thank you @easternedge.arc @holdfastfestival for having me.

This March 28, we are offering a space to restore and reclaim what is invisible.
rift invites you to
Invisible Offerings
Performances by Koko Mariano and Joliz Dela Peña
March 28, Saturday | 5–8pm | rift
Program:
5pm Performances
7pm Artists talkback
In these back-to-back performances, artists Koko Mariano and Joliz Dela Peña explore what is made invisible in labor and in spiritual life. Through gesture, play, sound, and instrumentation, they offer to re-compose it: recomposing the invisible from social structures and systems that effaced them, embodying what is felt in the psyche under the duress of colonialities of migration and religion. Where invisibility too is often woven through contemplations of Filipino identities—invisibilized care, ancestral uprootings, decimated histories—these performances offer a space where the body reclaims and self-determines.
About the artists:
Koko (@bakla__af) is a diasporic sound and performance artist exploring the intersections of heritage preservation, queer expression, and contemporary performance practices. Intertwining sustainable design by making their own instruments from found materials, implementing slow technology in their deep listening practices, and electroacoustic experimentation in reimagining how sound is consumed; they are rooted in intuition and ancestral knowledge where their practice weaves territory and body to unearth stories that have been buried or forgotten.
Joliz (@ziloj), also known as JDP 2009, is a self-taught interdisciplinary artist and a cultural worker born in the Philippines, now based in Tiohtià: ke/Montreal. Intimate connection to memories, identity, and immigration are recurring themes in Dela Peña’s practice. Through performance accompanied by installations, she pursues to relive realities, explore its complexities, and translate invisible tension/s into various visual and tactile qualities.

Walking barefoot to touch polished pebbles the size of the cereal you’ve always wanted as a child
You want to see everything within grayscale, illuminated by the soft morning sun
Dust particles dance inside the invisible border of a sunbeam
I inhaled myself once there
Head gazed up, mouth half open
Cracking of the bamboos on my left ear
The other was echoes of yearning
My heart feels better. I can talk to myself again without uttering a word. I simply live without a hurry. Own my values. Practice without expectations. I eat wisdom with bare hands. I cry, without thinking it should be caused by pain and suffering.

Performance at Le Lieu last October. A performance night showcasing the fruition of a residency in Norogachi, Mexico during the Raramuri’s holy week tradition.
This piece is still in reflection today. Its an introspection on what we can take as a witnesses and transform as descendants to a lineage, who we are as the future ancestors, any many more difficult intrusive thoughts (many of which formulated during the long bus rides in the desert..)

Thank you to the many brains that helped nourish and gave a critical eye on this piece. (u know who u are)

Faith and custom often stand as witnesses in these unions, sanctifying obedience over consent. What is called sacred becomes a chain — love rewritten as duty, purity, and fear.
-
Every year globally, 12 million girls are forced into marriage before turning eighteen, sealingtheir futures in ceremonies disguised as tradition. More than 650 million women alive today were once child brides, their girlhood exchanged for religion’s blessing or culture’s silence.
-
One in three women worldwide has known the fist or threat of an intimate partner: a statistic so familiar it almost stops sounding like tragedy. Violence in the home remains the quietest war, fought in kitchens and prayer rooms alike.
-
In Canada, police recorded over 128,000 cases of intimate partner violence. Nearly 80% of victims were women (statistics from 2024). Behind each report is a door closed too tightly, a neighbour pretending not to hear.
-
Almost four in ten women in Québec have endured psychological, physical, or sexual violence from a partner. The province’s silence hums beneath its progressive laws, proof that safety does not always follow policy.
-
About 18% of Filipino women aged 15–49 have suffered abuse at the hands of their husbands or partners. In a country where devotion and endurance are taught side by side, violence often hides behind prayers and wedding rings.
