Hi! Update from me during a time that’s been heavily dominated by media— whose mission is to distract us from our power and our right to practice peace as a collective 🔔.
I’m working with analog materials, ideas before hyper-capitalism/colonialism/patriarchy, and of course found trash.

Please join us @bakla__af, @iridesy.musique @futureancestors.collective this Friday evening for a live audio-visual teleperformance connecting vibrations across oceans from Montreal to the Philippines. ‘Incantations’ graciously supported by @easternblocmtl and @sit.scenesinteractives is an offering to connect and imagine otherwise.

Discover Incantations by the collective Future Ancestors (@futureancestors.collective): Koko Mariano (@bakla__af), Jielin Liu (@iridesy.musique) and Najeeba Ahmed (@ajeebsir), presented as a residency showing on May 1st at Eastern Bloc. Free admission, RSVP via link in bio.
A performance bringing together artists in Montreal and the Philippines, questioning how we relate to each other in fragmented worlds. The project unfolds in three parts: separation, togetherness and community, exploring speculative forms of communication beyond language.
Future Ancestors is a Montreal-based collective whose practices circle the same questions: what does it mean to carry ancestral knowledge in a diasporic body? How do we hold multiple temporalities at once, pre-colonial, diasporic and contemporary, without flattening any of them?
An instrument for penance, for favours, for guilt, for faithfulness, for family, for self, for remembering, for forgetting, for the narrow masculine depiction of devotion as violent.
(Pt. 1/2)
My interpretation of a burilyos (bulyos) is made from bamboo where each piece is braided and reinforced with abacca rope that is attached to paper that is woven. My first time working with these materials guided a reconnection with the land and through its transformation I observed its potential meanings of prayer and intention. With it, I co-created sound with my body in space and echoed Catholic past into present. Each slam of the bamboo into my back was cathartic. A release of the forced indoctrination from Spanish rule still felt in my body centuries later that presents itself as shame and justified suffering. In this action, I choose the possibility of my instrument as an inward conversation towards my own peacefulness rather than an outward depiction to others to earn forgiveness. #penitensya
Existing in the diaspora, this is my first ever performance in the Philippines and my spirit makes itself known. 🫶🏾💖🌴✨️ Tysm @rift.edsa for fostering experimentation and layered dialogue. My cultural liason @iirieisland, who sees the missing pieces. And my b2b co-performer @ziloj where Universe brings us tgt at the right time and place always.

Invisible Offerings
Performances by Koko Mariano and Joliz Dela Peña
March 28, Saturday | 5–8pm | rift
Program:
5pm Performances
7pm Artists talkback
In these back-to-back performances, artists Koko Mariano and Joliz Dela Peña explore what is made invisible in labor and in spiritual life. Through gesture, play, sound, and instrumentation, they offer to re-compose it: recomposing the invisible from social structures and systems that effaced them, embodying what is felt in the psyche under the duress of colonialities of migration and religion. Where invisibility too is often woven through contemplations of Filipino identities—invisibilized care, ancestral uprootings, decimated histories—these performances offer a space where the body reclaims and self-determines.
About the artists:
Koko (@bakla__af) is a diasporic sound and performance artist exploring the intersections of heritage preservation, queer expression, and contemporary performance practices. Intertwining sustainable design by making their own instruments from found materials, implementing slow technology in their deep listening practices, and electroacoustic experimentation in reimagining how sound is consumed; they are rooted in intuition and ancestral knowledge where their practice weaves territory and body to unearth stories that have been buried or forgotten.
Joliz (@ziloj), also known as JDP 2009, is a self-taught interdisciplinary artist and a cultural worker born in the Philippines, now based in Tiohtià: ke/Montreal. Intimate connection to memories, identity, and immigration are recurring themes in Dela Peña’s practice. Through performance accompanied by installations, she pursues to relive realities, explore its complexities, and translate invisible tension/s into various visual and tactile qualities.
