We’re excited to share a first glimpse of 𝘐𝘯𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘰 — an animated short film by Wanderwelle & Roger Ballen.

Based on the enigmatic photographic work from Roger Ballen’s forthcoming book 𝘐𝘯𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘰, to be published this November by @postcartedizioni and itself inspired by Dante Alighieri’s odyssey into the underworld, the film transforms these images into a slow-burning, hallucinatory journey.

But this isn’t your usual hell. Wanderwelle conjured a stony, desolate shadowland, sparsely inhabited by Ballen’s glowing spectres and drifting phantoms. Expect a descent into a subterranean realm where memory and despair intertwine…

Wanderwelle wrote, directed, animated, and scored the piece — breathing sound, motion, and narrative into Ballen’s photographs.

Where antique cavalry trumpets shaped 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘥𝘴 𝘈𝘣𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘰𝘸𝘴 (2022) and a dying church organ defined 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘉𝘶𝘳𝘺 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘴 𝘈𝘵 𝘚𝘦𝘢 (2023), this final chapter centres on cymbals submerged in seawater and slowly corroded over time, played with bows and mallets.
