We all know that techno was invented in Detroit in the mid to late 80s, right? Well, sort of. Because this footage - the earliest surviving film of Düsseldorf's gamechangingelectronic pioneers - appears to show them laying down some rather banging four to the floor techno during an improvised set at German festival Rockpalast way back in 1970. Check the rather saucer eyed audience having their minds utterly blown too!

For the first video in this series, we’re highlighting Todd Edwards’ legendary debut UK performance at Time & Envy, Romford. This set has gone down as one of the most iconic moments in house and UK garage, not just for the crowd’s infectious energy and reactions, but also for Todd’s own response to playing to such a huge UK audience.
As he later told The Guardian’s Alexis Petridis:
“I didn’t know what a rewind was. I didn’t know they had MCs chanting and getting the crowd riled up. The communication between the audience and the DJ was like nothing I’d seen before. Which gave me a new admiration for what DJing was in the first place.”

@hyperdriverecords is back with a third outing which once again offers up some exciting and forward-thinking new artists. @wexualmatt 'Sweet Psylow' kicks off with some psychedelic synth loops over crisp tech house drums that hark back to the 90s prog heyday. HearThuG’s 'Back To The Future' is a darker sound with whistles, snappy snares and eerie chords and @luismalon_ & @sebglive then combine for the bouncing techno rhythms and acid-laced pads of 'Extasis Nebular.' Last but not least, @jamieleather_ 'Strange Commodities' is a surging cosmic techno trip with dynamic drums and perc and majestic leads. This is another fine release from this young label.

Stardust - “Music Sounds Better With You”.
Born from a live jam at Rex Club, Paris, with Alan Braxe, Thomas Bangalter and Benjamin Diamond.
Built around a Chaka Khan sample, an SP-1200, TR-909 drums and one of the most recognisable vocal hooks in dance music.
After its success, they reportedly turned down millions to make a full album - leaving Stardust as a one-track mystery.

Norm Talley's Upstairs Asylum is a contemporary Detroit house favourite. This latest 12" is an update of what's going on in the Motor City right now, with four local producers all coming correct. The inimitable Dez Andres kicks off with one of his smooth hip-hop inclined deep house jams with sunny melodies and hooky vocals, then DJ Ryte Nou sinks into a warm, cuddly house sound with a soulful vocal smudged into the mix on 'Aint Going No-Way.' Marcus Harris takes care of the flip with a pair of seriously vibes sounds - the first well swung and dubby, the second with a more expressive rhythm and big guitar licks adding some Balearic charm.

Berlin's quality Mood Waves label welcomes rising star Lawrence Asher for what is his maiden vinyl outing here. It's a grown-up sound that suggests a love of classic Detroit and Chicago foundations but builds on them with a futuristic perspective. 'Time, Earth' is raw and twitches with acidic texture, while 'Mirage' has thumping drum patterns and fantastic percussive accents. 'Re-start' rides on broken beats and has nice frayed edges and that roughed up analogue texture that makes such tunes so instantly well aged. 'Tasteless Soil' closes with a mix of physical drums and intriguing, pixel-thin synths that tell their own story.

Since showcasing his scalpel skills on Hot Biscuit earlier in the year, The Mighty Zaf (private press disco and boogie specialist Zaf Choudry) has returned to the warm and comforting surroundings of his own rework-focused imprint, 80s. Here he reunites with regular studio buddy Linkwood (Edinburgh producer Nick More) with killer reworks of two more dusty, largely unknown dancefloor gems. A-side 'You're All My Dreams Are Made Of' is particularly potent - a lightly stretched-out revision of a hybrid disco/boogie number in which soulful lead vocals, sweeping strings, kaleidoscopic synth sounds and rousing horn licks rise above an infectious, bass-heavy groove. Over on the flip, the pair re-edit a more high-tempo slag of boogie-era disco release ('Rainy Day'), with predictably impressive results.

808 State performing “Pacific”.
Released in 1989, the track became one of the defining records of the UK acid house movement - blending ambient textures, breakbeats and machine rhythm into something entirely new.
Soon after, electronic music was reaching Top Of The Pops.

Some 50 years have now passed since Kraftwerk, then famous for the kosmiche/Krautrock-adjacent Autobahn album, shocked listeners with something genuinely new and fresh: an all-electronic album that would usher in their era as techno and electro-pop pioneers. Inspired by their obsession with all things nuclear (at the time, nuclear power stations were still relatively new and the threat of nuclear war was ever-present), Radioactivity flitted between daring experiments (crackling opener 'Gieger Counter'), future-pop earworms ('Radioactivity'), mutations on a melodic theme ('Radioland'), joyous instrumentals ('Airwaves'), music concrete style sound collage ('News') and starry ambience ('Radio Stars') - all while sonically referencing their on-point theme. Now remastered from the original tapes, the set returns via an anniversary 'picture disc' edition.
