Ryan was a radical maverick traveling through time and space✨✨he was inside a cosmic vibration moving ahead of most but also completely in time with everyone around him. 💜 I took the first and last shots here out at his favorite LA beach. He loved Los Angeles and the ocean. The next two photos are from one of my favorite all-time memories. I had the cheap (I mean like $1 last row seats!!) to see Herbie last summer at the Bowl. Of course, Ryan has played on stage at the Bowl and he's played with Herbie. So here I was asking - almost joking - if he wanted to come with me in my cheap ass seats. We packed up some food, wine and herb and had the best time pre-gaming, sitting in the very last top row of the Bowl, watching the sunset and talking about all the incredible music played on that stage. It was like a dream - and then when Herbie was about to come on, someone from the Bowl staff came up to the last row and asked a few of us if we wanted to sit in the front. We were then escorted to the front center table! Really! So here we are, right in front of Herbie and Terence Blanchard and the rest of the band - like right in front. They were all looking at each other, they recognized Ryan immediately. It was hilarious and fantastic, neither of us had ever been that close and for two homegrown LA kids, it couldn't get any better. The next morning we were both like, 'Was that a dream?!’ The next photo is Ryan in rehearsal with Kamasi and their band at LACMA's DGG. He was a brilliant musician and had the best sense of humor. He was going to score my next short film and had terrific ideas...I feel grateful to have been his friend and my heart goes out to his daughters and his family and all the musicians who will miss playing with him.
Ryan, safe travels xo🪶

Viva Artistas! Mind blown @mbellasartes Thanks for representing Chicano art and including so many Los Angeles artists - and friends! It’s so exciting for everyone showing their work in the historic and beautiful Palacio Bellas Artes! It was fun to make new friends and a shout out to the SF crew ✊🏾 so incredible to hang with the elders of the CDMX graffiti scene with Chaz. I have so much respect for their decades of letter styles evolving in close proximity. Precious moments all week long! Grateful ⚡️

We had a terrific night at last night’s premiere of our short film Transition! We celebrated Latina independent cinema, laughed, cried, and there was even some awesome grind house horror in our block (@irisalmaraz rules!) Thank you @lifefestla 💜🎥✨ So much fun and great to hang with some of our cast and crew. The screening was sold out⚡️ Thank you for coming! I’m so grateful and happy to finally show the film on the big screen and share it with an audience. My heart is full and we can’t wait to share more Transition with you soon! Stay tuned 🛹

Thank you @nicolee.macias and @delosangelestimes for giving the @lifefestla some love. I appreciate your acknowledgement and your article is damn right. We’re living in a Hollywood apartheid and every little bit of encouragement goes a long way.⚡️ Latinos make up more than half of Los Angeles yet our stories are gatekept. Aren’t people bored of watching films about white people all the time? Doesn’t it get old watching a tokenized character in a movie? Dr @anachristinaramon and @ucla are about to put out their Hollywood Diversity Theatrical Report on March 12th and I can’t wait to see that data. Their analysis proves we’re in a Hollywood apartheid and I just hope anyone working in the business can make some better decisions when packaging projects. I have hope and am determined to show people how much richer their lives would be if they were exposed to more American films that actually represent our communities. Not every film has to be lead by a white male narrative. Aren’t you bored? How can we get these men to share the spotlight or step aside once in awhile?!! There’s plenty of movie theater screens for everyone. ❤️
I have a huge amount of gratitude for @josefinalopezrwhc @iamcristinanava @irisalmaraz and their work on this terrific festival. I went to my first director’s dinner last night and I sat in a room with at least 40 other brown female directors and it was so empowering.
Our short Transition is screening this Friday night at 8pm in Boyle Heights. It’s Block 3, tickets are available here:

Kids! I have a new radio show on the air on @kpbj.fm It's called BERTHA RADIO and episode 2 airs tomorrow, Wednesday 2/25 at 9am and again at 9pm on KPBJ.fm
That's right, a Grateful Dead live music show, hosted by yours truly. xo
It's a pre-recorded show for the moment that streams online at KPBJ.fm as we are in the midst of fundraising for an antenna that will be installed on a hilltop in my hometown, Shadow Hills, and we build out a local studio. Basically, it's my DJ dream come true...and soon we will be on 95.9FM!
If you're interested and can spare some change to support freeform independent radio, please visit KPBJ.fm and make a donation and/or become a member.
THANK YOU for your eyeballs and ears on this.
***My show tomorrow is Bobby heavy, because he is missed!
(And btw EP 1 is archived on the site, just click on the shows tab and then find Bertha Radio)
