MATCH - Mediterranean as the Climate Hotspot
An arts project rooted in community gardens, fostering social awareness, climate adaptation, and community-based practices in the Mediterranean.

We opened the doors to a derelict space that had never been entered before, and it felt like the space itself had been waiting🌿
Nicosia Exhibition Opening Weekend Recap (April 25–26)
The exhibition opened its doors at the Gardens of the Future in Nicosia, and for the first time, an inhabited space within the Gardens welcomed an audience. There was something quietly profound about that.
The works of Christina Zampoulaki @christina.zampoulaki and Caterina Miralles @cate.e__ , developed through their MATCH residency across the Gardens, filled the secret garden with questions about land, water, memory, and care, approaching terrain not as a resource, but as a living system in constant transformation. Their works placed carefully in the greenery, guided the visitors to walk around the garden, like they would in their own outdoor space reminding that land is a living system.
What emerged from the residency went beyond individual practice: the two artists collaborated on a shared piece - a water filter built from reclaimed materials that will remain in the Gardens as a lasting, quiet contribution to the space that held them.
The exhibition will be opened until May 28 on Thursdays 10:00-17:00 and by appointment at virginia@d6.eu

Work in progress during the fifth MATCH Residency – Izmir Residency: Ecologies, Memory and Food Systems 🌾🌱
Artists Joana Amora @amoramamora and Maya Aghniadis (Flugen) @flugen.music are currently in residence at @k2izmir’s K2 Urla Breathing Zone (K2UBZ), where they are exploring the ecological, agricultural and cultural landscapes of İzmir through research, sound, image and collective encounters.
🌿 Joana Amora has been investigating the agricultural landscape, endemic species and food systems of the region. Through visits to local farmers and producers cultivating olive oil, grapes, artichokes, mulberries, wheat and other products, she is exploring how communities cultivate the land and sustain local ecosystems and ways of living. Alongside this, she has been connecting with local food communities, visiting bazaars, and walking through the forests around K2UBZ to identify endemic and edible species, while building a visual inventory of İzmir’s ecological food ecosystem through film documentation.
🎧 The work Maya Aghniadis (Flugen) explores the tension between human speed and nature’s time through sound and image. During her residency at K2UBZ, she has been using a geophone to record olive trees as an act of protest and remembrance for groves destroyed in Southern Lebanon by Zionist occupation forces. Through microscope lenses and hydrophone recordings, she reveals hidden textures and submerged soundscapes often unnoticed in everyday life. Her practice also includes a self-built harp carrying lost Mediterranean stories, cyanotypes reflecting ecology and memory, and Memoryscapes, a composition dedicated to buried histories and unresolved trauma.

A weekend of encounters, processes, and shared reflections 🌿
Exhibition opening weekend in Athens (April 24–26)
Exhibition #1 (Athens) unfolded through presentations, walks, and shared practices connecting research, ecological thinking, and collective processes.
At NTUA, Annalisa Zegna and Garance Maurer presented their research, followed by an introduction to the MATCH project by Nicholas Anastasopoulos. The program continued with a walk along the Pikrodafni stream and a field visit to Mount Parnitha as part of the Pyroscapes research.
At Duncan Dance Centre, discussions and presentations reflected on the ecology of the garden and embodied approaches to perception, with contributions by Annalisa Zegna, Garance Maurer and Vitoria Kotsalou.
Workshops with plant-based inks and clay took place over the weekend, alongside a ceramic firing process that culminated in the collective excavation of the works.
An ongoing weaving practice continues each Sunday, gradually building a shared textile archive of the project.

🌿 This weekend in Nicosia!
We are happy to remind you of the opening of EXHIBITION #2 within the MATCH project, taking place at the Gardens of the Future, Nicosia, on 25 April 2026.
The exhibition presents the works developed during the residencies of Christina Zampoulaki and Caterina Miralles, who explored land, water systems, and ecological transformation through interconnected artistic practices. Working between the Gardens of the Future and the former Skouriotissa copper mine, their projects reflect on extraction, memory, and the ways we relate to land today. Through installations, mapping, and material experimentation, their works— “Earth-bound Exercises” and “Margins of Definition” —approach land as a living system shaped by care, history, and human intervention, opening questions around responsibility and environmental change.

🌿 EXHIBITION #2 | NICOSIA 🌿
The MATCH journey continues in Nicosia with the second exhibition, which will take place at the Gardens of the Future from 25 April to 28 May 2026.
As part of their residency, artists Christina Zampoulaki and Caterina Miralles opened their studio to the public, sharing an insight into their ongoing research and collaborative process. Their work brings together “Earth-bound Exercises” and “Margins of Definition”, two interconnected projects exploring how we relate to land shaped by extraction, colonial histories, and ecological transformation.
Working between the Gardens of the Future and the landscape of the former Skouriotissa copper mine, the artists developed a practice grounded in attentiveness, care, and presence. Through fieldwork, mapping, water systems, and material experimentation, land emerges as a living system—holding memory and inviting new ways of knowing.
Christina Zampoulaki’s residency focused on the garden as a hybrid water system, where plants and human interventions form networks of collection, storage, and redistribution. Her work includes material experiments and a cyanotype zine tracing water as a shared, uneven system shaped by care and scarcity.
Caterina Miralles developed Margins of Definition during her residency in Nicosia, combining audiovisual installation and a permanent water collection structure in the garden. The project explores how land is defined through mapping, borders, and systems of control across different scales, from infrastructures to micro-ecologies.

🌿 EXHIBITION #1 | ATHENS 🌿
Within the framework of the MATCH project, a series of five local exhibitions unfolds between April and November 2026, following the post-production phase of the artistic residencies. These exhibitions share the works developed by participating artists across the Mediterranean, opening spaces for reflection, exchange, and collective encounter.
We are happy to announce the first exhibition in Athens, taking place at the Duncan Dance Centre from 24–26 April 2026.
Three artists — Garance Maurer, Annalisa Zegna, and Vitoria Kotsalou — have developed their residencies between October 2025 and April 2026, exploring climate change through different but interconnected perspectives. From fire and reforestation, to water systems and clay, to the garden as a living, shared ecosystem, their practices have transformed the residency space into a site of ecological and artistic experimentation.
Together, their work opens questions of care, dependence, and responsibility, while activating the garden as a space of encounter, movement, and collective reflection.

🌿🌾MATCH Residency 4 Barcelona — Recap 🌾🌿
Hosted at @laescocesabcn , this MATCH residency brought together artists Nafsika Hadjichristou and Hannah Taylor for a period of research, experimentation, and exchange in Barcelona.
Nafsika Hadjichristou explored how we can imagine collective futures beyond climate collapse through collective imagination and engagement with living practices in the city. Through workshops and research, she connected with social spaces and community gardens experimenting with alternative ways of living, creating and repairing relationships with the world around us. The residency concluded with an experimental stop-motion collage animation lab, bringing together participants to collectively imagine and materialise possible futures. She is now developing an audiovisual collage based on these shared experiences.
Hannah Taylor focused on direct engagement with landscapes and materials in Barcelona and the wider region. Through walks and informal gatherings, she collected overlooked materials from “Third Landscapes” and engaged with syntropic agriculture projects and urban gardens. She also explored urban systems of reuse through encounters with chatarreros, reflecting on material flows, value, and disposal in the city. Her research is informed by an “education of attention” through movement, practice, and making.
