A week ago today I filmed with @backshall.steve and @seahorsetrust down in Weymouth for the next @wwf_uk ‘Live Lesson’, which will be all about UK and global marine life, hosted by Steve and broadcast live from Plymouth Aquarium on the 9th June.

What we filmed of seahorses and other underwater creatures on the day will feature in the live lesson. Despite the visibility dropping to around a metre (good old British diving!), the keen eyes of the Seahorse Trust volunteers (CEO Neil Garrick-Maidment and Chris Brown) managed to find us two, both male and a female spiny seahorses (Hippocampus guttulatus).

Seahorses are highly protected in the UK and Steve and I dived as volunteers under the seahorse trust’s licence, which includes a number of strict guidelines so as not to disturb or stress these sensitive fish, including not using any form of lighting.

The live lesson is available free to schools on Tuesday 9th June at 2pm, and more information on how to watch can be found here: https://www.wwf.org.uk/get-involved/schools/happy-by-nature/live-lessons.

I took my @reddigitalcinema Gemini and Komodo-X in @gates.underwater housings for the underwater shots, and Red Komodo for the topside elements. A busy but very rewarding day!

BAFTA and RTS noms for Deadly 60 Shark Special! This is such an important moment for the Deadly team.

Our Shark Special not only came nose to snout with some of the most spectacular shark species, but met the legends helping to save them. So so chuffed

From concept to design to the reality of a new split rig for my B Cam Deep Komodo-X camera housing… Based upon a similar design I’ve been using with my Gemini/Pro Explore housing for the past five years, but now with the ability to slide the floats forwards and backwards to fine tune the tilt angle.

Definitely got some Star Wars Imperial Fleet TIE fighter vibes going on!

I’ve been testing the kit in Oman, and getting more archive material following a Deadly 60 shoot out here (more about that in another post coming soon!)

I’ve been hosted by @globalscubaoman, a super diving company, I can highly recommend their services!

It’s also been great to return to the Dimaniyat Islands, having spent five weeks diving and filming there in 2016 with @markmcclean01, @gailiejenks_photography, @sams_natural_habitat and @hayleysmithproducer back in the day… good memories!

Thanks to @elgeorgeo for the initial idea and sketch of concept of the sliding split rig.

All made possible with the help, support and engineering know-how from Dave Blackham and the @espritfilm @the.esprit.kitroom team who carried out the machining and 3D printing work for me.

Three generations of beach cleaners!

With a visit from my Mum, we spent a bit of time tackling the southern beach between Marine Drive Car Park and Oval Field today.

Loads of bananas but also worryingly plenty of foam still present, but not at first glance.

You have to look carefully, as it’s disguised as pebbles, but it also looks like broken bits of cuttlefish bones, but it is still there, and some of it will be buried under pebbles and crushed into powder already.

I believe Ambipar are due to collect the rubbish left in piles down this end tomorrow, but there are still plenty of bananas and visible foam pieces left going into Sunday along this stretch.

Great efforts from everyone involved, it’s been a huge community effort to get the beaches close to being cleared!

Three generations of beach cleaners!

With a visit from my Mum, we spent a bit of time tackling the southern beach between Marine Drive Car Park and Oval Field today.

The beach clean up continued today around all sides of the coastline here in Selsey. I helped tackle the southern area, and it was heart-warming to see so many residents, visitors and dog-walkers out doing their bit to get all the soft polythene (individual bunches of bananas wrapped up!) and hard plastic from the smashed up crates up above the high tide line.

The southern side fortunately didn’t have much in the way of the insulation foam, which is causing so many problems as it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, which is affecting both the west and east beaches, where a lot of the volunteers are concentrating their efforts.

There are now big piles of rubbish ready to be picked up by the contractors, so the sooner than can happen the better.

There is still plenty to do and the @selsey.beach_litter_ninjas and others will be gathering again at West Beach to continue their heroic clean up tomorrow, Wednesday morning. We can do this!

What was all a bit novel yesterday, when a number of containers spilled into the Solent and washed bananas and debris onto our local Selsey beaches, there is an underlying and serious ecological disaster unfolding on our shoreline from the container spills…

@selsey.beach_litter_ninjas, @selseyseabathing, @southcoastseagods and others in the community have been doing a great job making inroads into clearing up all the foam and plastic crates etc.

Efforts to clear have been ongoing since yesterday morning, and are still underway as the light fades tackling West Beach, with many bulk bags filled with waste. But there is so much more still to go, and urgently.

I know the official advice is to leave it to the council’s contractors to clear up, but the longer the foam is left, the smaller it will become, turning into microplastics, which will remain in the ecosystem… So time is of the essence to stop it from being a permanent pollutant. Its proper hands and knees sifting out tiny pieces of plastic kind of work.

We need all the help we can get… Can anyone lend a hand this week to help the community clear up?

The cargo ship the Baltic Clipper, which is operated by @seatrade_ spilled 16 containers into the sea on Saturday 6th morning.

@tesco, @asda and @seatrade are you going to help with this, considering you are the main parties responsible? Not a good look, I hope you can help clean up this mess and now!

Filming a hairy frogfish with Steve in Lembeh, Indonesia for series 6 of Deadly 60, which is out now!

@backshall.steve I came across a hairy frogfish, one of the ocean’s most bizarre creatures. Despite the name, it doesn’t hop or swim. Instead, it walks along the seabed using its fins like feet. Those “hairs” are actually extensions of its skin, helping it vanish into seaweed. A deadly demon in disguise. 🐟🌊

Filming whale sharks with Steve for Deadly 60 in Indonesia.

@backshall.steve Swimming with whale sharks is an experience like no other. At one point I had three around me, each the size of a moving bus. They can grow to twice the length of a London bus and weigh as much as four elephants. Smaller fish follow them closely, eating the scraps these giants leave behind. 🐋🌊
