The Seahorse Trust
A charity devoted to connecting people with the marine environment through seahorse research🪸

We had a fantastic seahorse rescue over the last couple of days on the south coast. This adult male Short Snouted Seahorse was washed up onto the sand. It was spotted by Julie and her family who scooped up the seahorse in their hands, making sure their hands had water in them and then moved it into deeper water where it swam off happily. Great rescue and thank you to Julie and her family for rescuing the seahorse and for reporting it into us. Great save! 🌊

A week ago today I filmed with @backshall.steve and @seahorsetrust down in Weymouth for the next @wwf_uk ‘Live Lesson’, which will be all about UK and global marine life, hosted by Steve and broadcast live from Plymouth Aquarium on the 9th June.
What we filmed of seahorses and other underwater creatures on the day will feature in the live lesson. Despite the visibility dropping to around a metre (good old British diving!), the keen eyes of the Seahorse Trust volunteers (CEO Neil Garrick-Maidment and Chris Brown) managed to find us two, both male and a female spiny seahorses (Hippocampus guttulatus).
Seahorses are highly protected in the UK and Steve and I dived as volunteers under the seahorse trust’s licence, which includes a number of strict guidelines so as not to disturb or stress these sensitive fish, including not using any form of lighting.
The live lesson is available free to schools on Tuesday 9th June at 2pm, and more information on how to watch can be found here: https://www.wwf.org.uk/get-involved/schools/happy-by-nature/live-lessons.
I took my @reddigitalcinema Gemini and Komodo-X in @gates.underwater housings for the underwater shots, and Red Komodo for the topside elements. A busy but very rewarding day!

A great save out at sea🌊🪸
A South Devon trawler skipper found and freed a short-shouted seahorse caught on his fishing pot last week. Chris Puncher, skipper and owner of Salcombe Fish and Shellfish Ltd in Devon caught the seahorse off Prawl Point on Sunday in what he called a “first-time-ever for us” catch.
The Seahorse Trust’s executive director and founder Neil Garrick-Maidment identified the seahorse at an estimated 16cm in length, and confirmed it was an “immature” adult male short-snouted seahorse, meaning it was not pregnant. Neil said: “It’s a great find and makes sense as they tend to be in deeper water at this time of year to avoid the storms in shallow water.
We encourage people who find a seahorse to take a quick picture without putting the welfare of the animal at risk, otherwise to put it straight back in the water.
