Beginnings: The Story of Creation in the Middle Ages opens today @gettymuseum !

Creation stories imagine the world’s origins, often leading to a shared cultural vision of identity and values. For medieval Christians, the Biblical story of the seven days of Creation was essential to understanding the natural and spiritual realms, as well as humanity’s role in bridging the two. @mssbethy and I are putting the permanent collection in conversation with gorgeous and important work by Harmonia Rosales (@honeiee), with exhibition design (including epic wall mural) by Alan Konishi and Aine McMahon.

See it until April 19th!

2016? Not a bad year: NYC, Philly, Jaffe (miss you all terribly), Kzoo, defended my dissertation, moved to LA, took photos in skinny jeans in front of aesthetic walls in Venice, what a time to be alive

2025! Spent most of the year pregnant. Opened two exhibitions (Our Voices, Our Getty and Going Places) with brilliant colleagues, wrote a book (more on that soon), traveled to see friends and talk about medieval stuff in Boston and Kalamazoo, took a pilgrimage to Chantilly and spent time in Paris and Nantes. Leo graduated preschool, turned 5, and we went to a zillion parks, playgrounds, beaches, and the aquarium (18 times, lol), ate a lot of french fries, ice cream, and had so much fun (and an occasional meltdown). The dogs dogged. We surprise renovated Leo’s entire room. I fulfilled my teenage self’s dreams and saw more live music than I have in ages (BSB in Vegas, Warped, MCR, ATL, and Mayday). My perfect sweet angel baby Felix was born in September days after I turned 41, and he is just the best. I even managed to get my hand tattooed. Here’s to more tattoos, treats, and adventures in 2026, happy new year 🖤

Now open! Going Places: Travel in the Middle Ages, an odyssey of medieval people getting from here to there for all sorts of reasons and by all manner of means.

Brilliantly brought to life by my co-curator (2023-2024 grad intern) Ben Allsopp and Team Travel @gettymuseum: @matthewkelm on the Indiana Jones-inspired design, Susan McGinty keeping things on track, Stephen Heer and Nancy Turner making all our manuscripts look beautiful, Roger Chacon and his team in Preps for literally making it happen, and Susan Green (and Spanish editor Iliana Alcantar) on polishing our prose.

This show also has a very special interactive that channels every elder millennial’s nostalgia for dying of dysentery on a long journey: Pilgrimage Road is our homage. Oregon Trail made medieval, the road to Santiago de Compostela is riddled with obstacles from brigands to plague to shortcuts (for a small fee), and of course a dangerous river crossing. Many thanks to the team in IC: Kevin McGowan, Steve Gemmel, Karen Voss for totally understanding the assignment. And special thanks to my fellow traveler Reed O’Mara (@prussiangiraffe) for her commitment to the bit. The bit being always dying of plague.

Check it out until Nov. 30th at the Getty Center!
