So excited to finally share this!
Beginnings: The Story of Creation in the Middle Ages opens January 27, 2026 at @gettymuseum.
This exhibition brings my paintings into conversation with medieval manuscripts, pairing earlier works with a newly commissioned piece created in collaboration with the Getty using a technique entirely new to my practice.
Together, these works explore differing imaginations of Creation. Grounded in African cosmology and Black history, my paintings offer a re-telling — one that resists erasure and centers the enduring resilience of Black histories.
Endlessly grateful to Dr. Elizabeth Morrison and @larisag for believing in this work, challenging me, and championing me over the past 4 years. Truly an honor to have worked with you.

Eve and the Orishas 48”x60” (2023)
On the play of Rubens “Consequences of War”. I show Eve (mother to the African diaspora) trying to protect and save the Orishas and their stories from becoming absorbed into the manuscripts as they flee from 3 of the 7 European powers (e.g. Spain = Bull).
As I write my last chapter to my first book, this story and others will tell a linear epic of the Orishas.

For too long, we’ve been out here without a mythology that speaks to us and for us. That changes now.
Chronicles of Ori carves out space where we’ve been left out — and takes it back with power.
Let me show you what our mythology looks like.
Pre-order now. Link in bio.

I often get asked what geographic region the subjects in my work are based in. The truth is, the work exists in my Ori: a mix of memories, imagination, and intuition, intertwined with the cultures, histories, and places that have shaped my identity. You’ll find fragments of many worlds woven throughout my paintings.
As my dad always says, “cada cabeza es un mundo” –– every mind is a world.

Venice has a way of making us step back in time. One moment you’re engulfed by old master works, and the next you’re in conversation with artists and thinkers shaping the future of culture in real time.
My biggest takeaway is that visual histories are never separate from one another, they’re constantly building, responding, and evolving through us.
I’m always inspired by Venice, but this time I left thinking about what it means to be an artist allowed to create something so monumental. A true testament to Koyo’s vision.
It made me want to be part of this legacy.

When family calls, I show up.
48 hours before leaving for the Venice Biennale, @badassboz called and asked if I could create something special for her Met Gala coverage. With this year’s theme centered around costume as art, transformation and identity, I immediately knew I wanted to approach the piece as more than fashion.
Whenever I think of Boz, I’m inspired by Eve and the deep sense of origin, beauty, and power she carries so naturally.
This was such a fun departure from my usual practice and a reminder that art can live anywhere.
Thank you again, Bozoma, for the opportunity. You truly embody art. ✨

An evening of reflection and reclamation.
In conversation on Chronicles of Ori, written by @honeiee , we discussed the status quo and what becomes possible when we explore beyond the singular dominant perspective.
Grateful for a room of openness, curiosity, and womanhood.

This #earthday , I’m focusing on a material I return to often in my practice: rust. Rust (iron oxide) becomes the rich red, yellow, black, and brown pigments emblematic of the iron-rich soils of the African continent. Its warm pigment and mineral depth add texture to a lot of my work.
For me, it is a way of grounding my work and exploring the relationship between nature.

Grateful for this beautiful night and the women who filled the room.
In collaboration with @ms_ibest , we gathered 20 women shaping culture across art, film, business and beyond around an intimate table that opened into something expansive. A lot of care, honesty, and perspective shared among these stellar visionaries.
A reminder of what it looks like to invest in one another, and to make space for more.
Thank you to @patternbeauty for the partnership, @camphorla for hosting us, @ibestwines for the wine, and @jorgemezaphotos for capturing the evening.

Who gets to be classical?
At @gettymuseum, artist Harmonia Rosales (@honeiee) remixes medieval masterpieces of Biblical creation, bringing Black female figures to the front.
Titled 'Beginnings: The Story of Creation in the Middle Ages," the show features new Baroque and Renaissance-style oil paintings by Rosales, created in response to 'Stammheim Missal,' the Getty's treasured illuminated manuscript.
“I approach my paintings as a way to reclaim stories long erased, using Yoruba cosmology to restore strength and presence to figures often left out of history,” the artist expressed.
The exhibition is now on view through April 19. Tap the link in our bio for more information.

I interpret Eve to be matriarch of the African diaspora. This portrait traces her life and lives our ancestors, carved into a halo of roundels (Ori); from birth, to gaining knowledge, to encountering manipulation, surviving the Middle Passage and the transatlantic slave trade, to death.
The presence of Eve’s body is used to disrupt this cycle. She represents a quiet act of refusal, and the reclamation of a destiny rooted in healing.
See her on view in Beginnings: The Story of Creation until April 19
