Today was applicant day at @uniwestlondon
We welcomed in potential students to visit the campus and to check out the various things that are on offer for students who might study at the university. I gave a brief overview on the ARP 2500 as well as set up 3 individual patches connected to aKeystep Pro and a Drumbrute impact so the applicants could jam with each other and tweak the parameters on the patches.

Broken Buchla bongos + Buchla Alien Keyboard.

In the Townshend Studio at the University of West London, we have a lot of retro, rare, and interesting instruments of all shapes and sizes. From the famous EMS Synthi 100 all the way to something small like the Buchla Easel command + 208c keyboard.

In these patches, I'm taking advantage of the pressure and pulse outputs on the 208c to play the Easel command like a bongo and an FX generator.

This is a perfect example of something you can learn to create if you sign up for an Electronic music course at The University of West London. Come down to the Townshend Studio, I'll be happy to help cultivate a desire for learning synthesis!

A small clip of me learning some of the features on the Synclavier 3200 in The Townshend Studio at@uniwestlondon.

I recorded individual voices into the 32 track memory recorder. Small loops were recorded and then manually cued in to create a sense of progression. It is possible to record long passages on the Synclavier as well as full tracks, the work flow is pretty smooth, almost like recording into a DAW but better in some ways!

It is unclear how far back this apparition’s story goes.She has appeared in myth or folklore in many cultures around the world.She has been known by many different names over the centuries but is most commonly referred to as The Sorrow.It is said that those who befall her spell will be consumed with insufferable sadness that will slowly drive them to their untimely demise.

At some point in human history,synthesizers were deemed evil by christians, and most of the world condemned the use of one. The complaints were that it sounds unnatural, it's going to introduce "ungodly sounds" or that it's going to replace acoustic instruments and do the same job as said instruments but much worse.

The funny thing about all of the ideology behind synthesizers back then is that it all stemmed from the fear of the unknown. Ironically, we are now harnessing that same concept and using it to expand music in many different ways using synthesizers.

This self generative piece is a perfect example of how organic and "real" sounding a synthesizer can be. The fear of the unknown is being channelled. Apart from the key and scale set for the patch, it is designed to constantly listen to itself and play melodies and atonal sounds back, feeding off of the voltages that are being generated and consumed in the system. I have 0 control over what it does at any given time. It's always a mind-blowing experience building self gen patches. The electricity running through the machinery is literally singing and deciding how low and how high in pitch it wants to sing. An ensemble of voltages then gives life to an electronic band or orchestra, with no conductor. It feeds off of itself in order to evolve. How people consider this not to be beautiful is beyond me....
