KINMAKERS (fka CEM)
A shapeshifting practice of polyphonic world-building rituals, kinmaking & somatic portals. Dreamed by @ssssuurrrrbbbbe & @lauraonsale

As you may know, we began the Centre for Emotional Materiality (CEM) in 2018 as an experimental collective, exploring the effects of digital technologies on our bodies, emotions, and beliefs. Over the years, it has transformed in many ways, and I’m excited to introduce its latest evolution: Kinmakers. Swipe through to explore the themes, concepts, and spaces we engage with.
Hidden Songs in Our Mother's Dreams, the opening chapter of Kinmakers, is currently on view at the Crow Museum of Asian Art in Dallas, Texas, through February 23.
This project is an amalgamation of practices, forms, and languages that Laura and I have been developing since 2019. This iteration includes a three-channel video installation, a video sculpture, a print, and ritual performances for the opening and closing. More details on these coming soon.

Song of Kin, Video Sculpture documentation from Hidden Songs in Our Mother’s Dream. @crowmuseum
✨SONG OF KIN ✨
I listen to dream.
the hum of kin
shimmers under my skin.
half-asleep,
half-awake,
my body, porous like sand,
luminous.
lines and wrinkles deepen,
when our hidden songs blend,
my love,
my friend,
my mother,
In my dream,
I am mine and,
you are yours,
and all that breathes is,
our kin.

✨first kin is always made with the self ✨
a self that expands beyond the body, yet is always shaped through it. a self that weaves the seen and unseen threads that bind us across generations, memories, dreams, and desires.
Each part of this installation; the song, the map, the hum, the ritualis a portal, a guide into Hidden Songs in Our Mothers’ Dreams. This is where the journey of deep listening and kinmaking begins. Because who would we be without our mothers?

Documentation of Ritual of Kinmagic performance by @brendavegaphoto

Join us for the closing performance of Kinmakers: Hidden Songs in Our Mother's Dreams at the Crow Museum of Asian Art on February 15th at 3 PM.
Ritual of Kinmagic is a world-building ritual where live movement and sound transform into a whole-body immersion inviting you to listen beyond yourself and ask, "What is it like to be you?" In this participatory performance, we will explore mirroring as a form of deep listening a practice of kinmaking in action.
Led by artists Surabhi Saraf and Laura Hyunjhee Kim, in collaboration with Zack Nguyen (@itszacknguyen) and Kristen Duong.
Exhibition runs from Sept 28th 2024-Feb 23rd, 2025

Embodiment and somatic practices have always been central to our explorations—how technology and emotions shape our bodies, beliefs, and ultimately, our perception of reality. From the beginning, we have sought antidotes to disembodiment and our culture’s pervasive obsession with technological determinism. Again and again, we’ve returned to one truth: embodied connection within communities is our most powerful form of resistance and repair.
From our very first movement workshop, Speed of Visible Thought (led by Indra Allegra in 2018), to Embodied Emotional Resilience (our first co-led workshop at Pioneer Works in 2019), our practice has been shaped by deep listening, movement, and collective care. Over time, we have sharpened our vision, refining what feels most resonant in our individual and collective practices as long-term collaborators.
With Kinmakers, we step fully into the mystical, embracing the playful, mysterious sensation that The Hum (aka the blob) evokes. Through participatory performance, we invite deep listening, porous movement, and expanded states of connection.

Over the years, the blob has taken many forms, an organizing principle, a metaphor for emotion, a shapeshifting intelligence. Somehow, nearly seven years later, I/we still can't get enough of it as it continues to evolve, revealing new ways of being. Now, within Kinmakers, the blob has become The Hum.
Porous and fluid, The Hum is a vessel of intergenerational memory and desire, the unspoken yet felt dreams of our mothers, their mothers, and beyond. It vibrates in the echoes of a lullaby, in the resonance of sound moving through the body.
Named after the primal act of humming, a practice of grounding and attunement, The Hum invites deep listening to the unseen frequencies that bind us. A shapeshifting presence within Kinmakers, it carries echoes of past forms, now attuned to kinmaking and quantum listening.

There infinite ways to open our hearts for deeper connection. Blob/ Blobbing is just one language.

“Inter-blobbing Towards the Love of Missing Out.” We offer this movement as an embodied antidote for when an obscured sense of fear starts crawling inside, crowding our sense of self-worth with messy feelings, clouding our pathway towards love.
♾gratitude & 💗@lauraonsale for leading us into this experience.
Also huge thanks to @nadassor @steveluber for inviting us and supporting us in all the best possible ways. 💫
