By @lumus.instruments | “Phase” is a new form exploration within the Polynode series. It consists of a double-layered array that creates a field of negative space. Phase-shifting lateral movements form shapes that exist only in our perception, while longitudinal motion reveals itself only in part.

The Polynode series invites us to engage with digital fields stretching through space and questions how we interface with their behaviour. The installation uses virtual nodes in a digital array that express themselves through light and sound. As patterns interact with these nodes, they generate spatially mapped audio along the body of the work. In this way, it becomes a spatial instrument in which neither light nor sound acts as the origin of the behavior that is being displayed.

This work was first presented at MIRA Festival in Barcelona. With the various forms of Polynode we continue to explore ways for digital systems to interface with the human experience. The progression from simple patterns to complex ones guides us into a state of “observational flow”, where there’s a constant tension between what we perceive and comprehend.

Many thanks to the MIRA team and team Berlin (Clara & Sven) to help us bring this installation into reality!

Polynode Phase II by Lumus Instruments (@lumus.instruments) reveals the hidden networks that connect our bodies, minds, and digital systems that continuously evolve and shape new realities beyond our perception.

You step into a space where light and sound respond to invisible flows of information. What begins as simple patterns within a single computational network gradually transforms into intricate behaviours that ripple through the room.

With Polynode Phase II, Julius Oosting (@juliusoosting) and Timo Lejeune (@timo_lejeune) of Lumus Instruments explore how technology can extend our sensory experience and expose the structures we inhabit but rarely perceive. It invites you to question where the boundaries of human awareness end, and whether they might someday expand to include the vast technological and human ecosystems that surround us.

Installation by Julius Oosting and Timo Lejeune
Sound by Max Frimout (@maxfrimout)

Experience Polynode Phase II at STRP Autumn ‘25. Join the performance night on Saturday and get full access to Kaleidoscopic Futures* the entire weekend21–23 November. Secure your spot. 🔗

On Saturday 22 November, STRP and Max Frimout (@maxfrimout) invite you to a night where art, sound and technology collide in a series of immersive performances. Here’s an overview into the second part of our programme.

POLYNODE

Created by Lumus Instruments (@lumus.instruments), led by Timo Lejeune (@timo_lejeune) and Julius Oosting (@juliusoosting). POLYNODE is a system that makes digital behaviour visible and audible in real time. Virtual nodes turn their interactions into light and sound, revealing how simple patterns grow into complexity and how digital systems interact with the space and time of human experience.

Blindsight
A collaboration between Lumus Instruments (@lumus.instruments), Maarten Vos (@maartenvos_), and Joon Kwak (@joonkwak), Blindsight brings together music, light and emotion and creates a sci-fi inspired performance. Drawing from Peter Watts’ novel Blindsight, the work looks at the boundaries between intelligence, perception and consciousness, bringing the audience into an audiovisual experience.

𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲:
20:00–21:00 Walk in
21:00–22:00 Motus Sonus x Lumus Instruments
22:00–23:00 Blindsight
23:00–00:00 DJ set by Joon Kwak
00:00–01:00 Live modular techno set by Maarten Vos

Did you know that when you buy a ticket for the performance night or for the workshop earlier that day, you’ll also get free access to the STRP Autumn ‘25 exhibition on Saturday 22 November? Tickets are limited. Secure your spot now.

The Yard, Voodoo Village Festival
— A tactile exploration between material, shape and the materiality of light.

Creative collaboration between @lumus.instruments and @simonesmelt for @voodoovillagefestival

As beams of light meet the mirrored surface, they bend, diffuse, and burst into prismatic fragments, forming a living architecture of light and reflection.

Twenty-six suspended aluminum totems reflecting and refracting light into fractured geometries — the third iteration of Reflecting Bodies

This project came to life through an intuitive and effortless collaboration between my dear friend @juliusoosting , @lumus.instruments and myself — a dialogue between form and light. It’s the result of trust, play and a shared curiosity for the tactile materiality of light.

Our performance with Polygonia (@_polygonia_ ) during Contrarium at Lofi was a near-spiritual experience: her minimalist soundscapes felt like poetry in motion. She transported us to alien yet strangely familiar landscapes, shifting between intricate textures and pulsating rhythms.

Our custom installation of 260 LED bars, forming a dynamic cross through the space, enveloped the audience in rhythm and light. Deep magenta and cool blue tones amplified the atmosphere, reflecting the mysterious and ethereal essence of her music.
