Each family or organization that hosts the dove convenes a gathering to share the story of Alex’s life and the ongoing case. After the dove moves to the next host, you will receive a precise handcrafted replica to keep — becoming a long-term steward and docent of the work, using the dove as a catalyst to share Alex’s story with anyone who visits your home. In this way, a single public sculpture quietly multiplies, dispersing into hundreds of homes and expanding the only public monument to an Arab American in the United States into a flock, each one carrying his story forward.

We are beginning by loaning the dove to individuals and organizations within approximately 30 miles of the monument (Santa Ana Public Library). To apply, tell us about yourself and who you might gather.

On Thursday, May 28, we are opening at Beta—Local an exhibition of works and processes emerging from the Marunguey Laboratory, led by Jaime Pagán Jiménez. The exhibition brings together texts, materials, and documentation that have brought us closer to the marunguey as plant, food, biocultural archive, and catalyst of island memory.

That same day, we are also inaugurating the Beta—Local Nursery, a space dedicated to cultivating endemic, native, and culturally significant plants of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

The exhibition is presented in conversation with the Museo Nacional de lo que queda.

Save the date! 📅 Thursday, May 28 · 6:00pm 📍 Beta—Local 1412 Ave. Manuel Fernández Juncos, Santurce

The Alex Odeh Memorial Statue was created by Algerian American political cartoonist and sculptor Khalil Bendib to honor slain Palestinian American civil rights advocate Alex Odeh.

Bendib proposed the idea for the memorial to Odeh’s widow in 1992.

The completed sculpture was formally offered to the City of Santa Ana and unanimously accepted by the City Council in September 1993.

The dedication ceremony took place on April 10, 1994, in front of the Santa Ana Public Library and was attended by more than 500 people, including local politicians and community activists.

In 2020 the sculpture’s dove of peace, held in Odeh’s outstretched hand, was stolen, later recovered by police, and eventually reattached to the monument. This act of vandalism is one of many that the sculpture has endured over the last 30 years.

Working with the city, Alex’s family and with Bendib’s permission, we have removed the dove once more, this time with intention and care, so it can circulate as a messenger carrying forward the story of Odeh’s life and work and the justice still yet to be delivered in his case.

By setting the dove in motion again, we invite the public to participate in a living monument- one that expands beyond the library grounds and the bronze figure into the everyday lives of those who choose to know and tell Alex’s story.

The dove began its journey with Alex’s daughter Helena and wife Norma, and is traveling ever outward to a series of homes and institutions connected to and inspired by Odeh’s legacy.

Each are temporarily hosting the dove and sharing its story with their families, friends, and communities.

After its travels, the dove will be returned to the statue.

Interested in hosting the Stolen Dove?

The Stolen Dove is a bronze dove removed with care from the only public monument of an Arab American in the United States — a sculpture of Palestinian American civil-rights leader Alex Odeh, who was assassinated in 1985, his killers never brought to justice.

In 2020 the dove was stolen, recovered, and restored — one of many attacks the sculpture has endured. Working with Alex’s family and the original sculptor, we have removed it once more, this time with intention, sending it out as a messenger carrying forward Odeh’s story and the justice still owed in his case.

Hosts are invited to welcome the dove into their home for an evening — a dinner with friends, a conversation with family, or a gathering with community. When the dove moves on, you will be gifted a precise handcrafted replica to keep and display. By housing it, you become part of a decentralized monument — a single dove multiplying into a flock, dispersed across the world, each holder a lasting steward of Alex’s story.

We are beginning by loaning the dove to individuals and organizations within approximately 30 miles of the monument (Santa Ana Public Library). To apply, tell us about yourself and who you might gather.

DM or contact us at grandcentral@fullerton.edu to apply or learn more.

THE STOLEN DOVE - REPLICA DOVES
MANA STUDIOS

As a major component of Jon Rubin’s ‘The Stolen Dove’ project, each family or organization that hosts the dove will convene a community gathering to share the story of Alex Odeh’s life and the ongoing pursuit of justice in his case. After passing the dove to the next host, they will receive a precise, handmade replica dove as a gift, enabling them to continue carrying the story forward. In this way, a single public sculpture of a dove multiplies into a flock, with each host becoming a long-term steward and storyteller. A vandal can deface one statue in a public park, but they cannot erase a story that lives across dozens of homes and communities.

We are truly grateful to be working with CSUF alum Jay Garcia (B.A. Illustration ’96) and his outstanding team at Mana Studios on the production of these replica doves. Established in 2004 and located just a few miles up Main Street from GCAC, Mana Studios is Jay’s full-spectrum 3D design studio—bringing ideas to life through both digital and traditional processes. From concept to completion, their expertise spans digital and traditional sculpting, molding, casting, concept art, and design. With years of industry experience, Jay and his team pair the highest-quality materials with cutting-edge techniques to achieve exceptional results. When you see the replica doves in person, you’ll understand exactly why we’re so excited to partner with Mana Studios.

🌱 We launched the public programming of Laboratorio Marunguey with the tour “What Remains: an encounter several thousand years later.”

We gathered with the marunguey (Zamia spp.) in the company of Jaime Pagán Jiménez @jaime.pagan.jimenez, a Puerto Rican anthropologist, archaeologist, and paleoethnobotanist. Of the Caribbean’s native species, Puerto Rico is home to three, one of them endemic: Zamia portoricensis.

Conceived not as a conventional tour but as a living exhibition, the experience invited an active, multisensory contemplation of the landscape, opening new ways of thinking about the relationships between body, territory, and situated knowledge.

Laboratorio Marunguey proposes a space for interdisciplinary and collaborative research around the marunguey as plant, food, biocultural archive, and trigger of island memory. This program is also in conversation with the Museo Nacional de lo que queda, a project by @the.national.museum and @beta_local .

We are very excited to announce the launch of the Marunguey Laboratory, led by Jaime Pagán Jiménez!

¡Anunciamos con mucha emoción el inicio del Laboratorio Marunguey, liderado por Jaime Pagán Jiménez!

🌱 This laboratory proposes an interdisciplinary research space centered on marunguey (Zamia spp.), an ancestral food plant of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, common in mogotes and karst regions. Although it has historically been edible, if not rigorously processed it can be up to seven times more toxic than bitter cassava.

Within the context of this program, marunguey is a plant, a food, a biocultural archive, and a catalyst for island memory from which to explore the connections between situated knowledge, contemporary ecologies, creative processes, and the intergenerational transmission of knowledge in the Caribbean. The laboratory also engages in dialogue with the Museo Nacional de lo que queda, a project by @the.national.museum and @beta_local , which focuses on attending to historical traces and begins from emancipatory readings of cracks and fissures—a proposal for a museum that, in the face of apparent deficiencies, recognizes a constellation of presences.

-—

————

El Museo Nacional de lo que queda, focuses on paying attention to historical traces. In Puerto Rico there is often a sense of living in a constant present which, one could argue, denies the possibility of understanding our pasts. Within this condition of disarticulated narrative, we do not propose a totalizing history, nor a nostalgic position toward what has been lost. Instead, we begin from emancipatory readings of traces, cracks, and fissures, in short, in the face of apparent absence, we propose a constellation of presences.

We begin this exercise by focusing, together with ethnopaleobotanist Jaime Pagán Jiménez, on the Marunguey. This zamia is one of the oldest plants in the Caribbean, witness to the region’s unfolding and a guardian of our forests. In 2019 we launched The Other Apartment in our hometowns of Tehran and Pittsburgh.

From the original description:
The Other Apartment is a collaborative project between Pittsburgh-based artist Jon Rubin and Tehran-based artist Sohrab Kashani that occurs simultaneously in Kashani’s apartment in Tehran, Iran, and an exact replica of that apartment and all of its contents at the Mattress Factory Museum in Pittsburgh, U.S.. Using detailed photographs from Kashani (who is not able to travel to the U.S. due to the current Trump travel ban on Iranian citizens), the artists worked with a team of fabricators to meticulously recreate his Tehran apartment’s facade, interior architecture, and all of his personal possessions. From his soap dish to his furniture, everything in The Other Apartment has been purchased, altered, or entirely fabricated to replicate what exists in Kashani’s apartment.

For the past 11 years, Kashani has used his apartment as a space for exhibiting contemporary art and as an artist residency, one of the first of its kind in the country. From September 2019 through July 2020, Kashani and Rubin will operate the space together, producing exhibitions, programs, and events where every object, video, and performance that happens in one space is reproduced for the other, keeping both apartments identical across the 6,300 miles that separate them.

The Other Apartment functioned as a series of theoretical and practical questions within the sad absurdity of our current political condition: What if there was more than one absolute reality; can you build a space that functions as a political loophole; and what gets lost and gained in the act of doubling?
