Portrait of Alta Campania, in the province of Caserta, historic land of Falernian, the most highly praised wine of ancient Rome (albeit, today's wine is not the Falernum of old), based on Falanghina for whites; reds, a blend of Aglianico and Piedirosso, or Primitivo, both designated Falerno del Massico DOP (Bianco & Rosso). Another important designation is Terra di Volturno, which is home to several indigenous grapes including Pallagrella (Biancho and Nero), reds Casavecchia, Piedirosso (found elsewhere in the region), and Coda di Pecora, a marvelous white grape found only at Il Verro winery. 1) ancient, restored house in Villa Matilde vineyard 2) Maria Cristina De Simone Avallone, VM winemaker 3) Michele Alois in a vineyard of Casavecchia grapes 4) Cesare Avenue of Il Verro. 5) Il Verro's Verginaio vineyard, that monks had dedicated to the Virgin Mary.@cantinealois @villamatilde ilverro @campaniastories#terradelvolturno,#falernodelmassico #pallagrello #casavecchia piedirosso #codadipecora

in a world gone mad, it's important to take in beauty as it comes. I'm grateful for @campaniastories for offering the chance to experience to do so in southern Italy, famous land of volcanoes, irrepressible Naples, stunningly beautiful vistas, and distinctive, soulful wines that resurrect and reinterpret history through 20 or so autochthonous grape varieties made into varying styles. The starting point1) Panorama of Casa Setaro, in the south slopes of Vesuvius overlooking the Gulf of Sorento 2) Gulf of Sorento 3) Massimo Setaro showing how he regenerates old vines by burying canes in the ground that will root themselves. 4) When in Rome, or rather in the shadow of Vesuvius, south of Naples, you need an amphora, with an airlock, of course. No beeswax or pine resin necessary. #campaniastories #iobevocampano #casasetaro #volcanicwine @casasetaro @rosenthalwinemerchant

Resilience In A Bottle: 5,000 Years Of Palestinian Wine

Many are surprised that wine is even possible in Palestine, based on the erroneous belief that the climate is too hot (never mind that the weather is comparable to much of Italy), or that it is forbidden for religious reasons (Palestine’s Christian community is the world’s oldest and a vibrant part of Palestinian society). In fact, Palestinian wine production dates back over 5,000 years, from the Canaanite era to the present, and every period in between: Philistine, Hebrew, Assyrian, Babylonian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Frank, Ottomans, and others.

FLXcursion - Riesling jamboree (I'm terrible at IG postings!), it's incredible that a week has already passed since returning to NYC after an exceptional conference that brought together multiple luminaries from the world of Riesling: winemakers from Germany, Austria, France, Hungary, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, California, Oregon, and New York State; journos, wine directors; somms + others from N. America and the UK, to discuss, dissect, debate, and deliberate issues around the world's greatest white grape. Conference topics were seminars about riesling from River Valleys, Lakes, and Dry Valleys. The latter, titled 'Dust in the Wind,' was an interrogation of how what is conventionally considered a 'cool climate' grape can thrive in what are usually warm regions that remain dry during the growing season moderated by yours truly. Regions covered included several from Australia, Washington State, and California, plus some unexpected, exceptional discoveries from Greece, Chile, and... Colorado (Storm Cellars – great!).

Vital panels were had on climate change, diversity, & inclusion, too.

Pics: 1) Living Roots Vineyard 2) Dry Valley Panelists (l-r) - Graham Tatomer, Mark Davidson, me; 3) Its wines; 4) Grand Tasting; 5) Tara Thomas and winemaker Dr. Enno Lippold6) Old/new grapes panel with (l-r), TT, Chris Bates, Jamie Goode; 7) first rule of photography: don't cut people off at the legs; more important rule: take better photos of your awesome hosts, Oskar Bynke and Kelby Russell; 8) Les demoiselles de Riesling; 9&10) Lucky ducks (or, spotted ones, anyway.

Regions covered included several from Australia, Washington State, and California, plus some unexpected, exceptional discoveries from Greece, Chile, and... Colorado (Storm Cellars – great!).

Vital panels were had on climate change, diversity, & inclusion, too.

Another foray into Stalinography: a visit to the underground revolutionary printing press he ran in Tbilisi from 1903 to 1906, until it was destroyed by Tsarist police. The press, 10 meters under a modest house, was accessible through a well in the yard. The revolutionaries (they weren't yet splintered into Bolsheviks, Mensheviks, various socialists, etc) would climb down the well some 17 meters, and then crawl through a tunnel connected to the clandestine, small printing factory.Apparently, the press, which came from Augsburg, was taken apart, then reassembled piece by piece once underground. The manifestos, the declarations, and other materials were printed in Russian, Georgian, and Armenian, and were distributed throughout the Caucuses, in other parts of the Russian Empire, and in cities around Europe. Lenin, then living in Geneva, helped with the latter.

The rest is history, as they say, the heroic, the tragic, the triumphant, and the horrible.

Plyto, a Cretan grape so rare, that I didn't have a chance to taste it. But, for all the amateur ampelographers out there, here's what the leaves look like.As for wine, it's supposed to be fresh and lemony, though few make it. Apparently, Lyrakis winery is one that does. They also make a wine from the also very rare Dafnì grape (didn't see the vines) that tastes remarkably like its namesake, daphne, aka bay laurel. So herbal and aromatic, it could stand in for retsina, though probably some might take offense with the comparison.#winesofcrete #crete #cretanwine #dafni #plyto #greekwine @winesofcrete @winesofgreece @allaboutgreekwine @colangelopr

Romeiko, another Cretan, but more specific to the area around Chaina, in the northwest of the island. In some ways, it's the most Dionysian of local grapes, not only to appear in different types of wines: red, rosé, white (as a blanc de noir), still, sparkling, dry, and sweet, but its berries, too, appear in a calico ofcolors on the same bunch. #winesofcrete #greekwine #crete #autochthonousgrapes #liatiko @winesofcrete @allaboutgreekwine @colangelopr
