MONGRELS world premiered at @viffest and is the recipient of the @dgctalent Horizon Award.
It’s a strange indescribable feeling watching a feature length film play before your eyes in a theatre packed with audience for the first time after it’s been quietly growing in your mind for so long. All a bit surreal as it started out as a seed of an idea stuck in my brain once upon a time.
All the more special as beloved cast, crew, family, friends and peers was able to join the very first screening. Unknown to the general audience is that behind every frame is a memory: sunsets, long days, sweat, blood, laughter, tears, heartbreak and mosquitoes. It was a blessing to have the team present at the premiere to relive these moments together. This film wouldn’t have been possible without their efforts.
I was first introduced to some of my favorite filmmakers that shaped Mongrels cinematic language and vision at VIFF including Andrea Arnold and Koreeda Hirokazu. It’s a full circle moment to premiere my debut feature film with my hometown festival and play on those same screens, which I so deeply admired.
Thank you VIFF, my team and community for leaving me with moments that I’ll never forget and making the premiere of Mongrels so special.

MONGRELS is the winner of the Special Jury Prize in the First Feature Competition and the @fipresci Award at the 28th @tallinnblacknightsff the largest FIAPF film festival in Northern Europe.
Heartfelt thank you to the team back home in Vancouver and our cast in Seoul. This win is for you.
Special Jury Prize for Cast // Jury:
“A heartfelt film about dislocation, re-location and how one family deal in each their own way (and together) in coming to terms with a family tragedy, and in particular how a father comes to understand and accept that his son is not the warrior he is.
FIPRESCI Award // Jury:
“Under Yoo’s skillful handling of multiple story lines, what could have been a run-of-the-mill evocation of the hardships of emigration, becomes a thoughtful meditation on the nature of grief, and in particular grief experienced in childhood. The film’s representation of the relations between dogs and humans (closer than you might think) is strikingly original. Its underlying logic is emotional and poetic, and there are images in the film that will be lodged in the memory long after Yoo has embarked on his second feature.”

Fujifilm pic dump from the last several months of roaming around. Sights, moments and folks I adore.
Chuseok holiday season is coming to an end in Korea and I take this moment to reflect and look back. I hope everyone is doing well.

Jeonju IFF’s audience is well known to be passionate cinephiles. Although I sat in with audiences plenty of times now, my anxiety and nerves got so bad I ran out the theatre within the first 5 minutes. This would finally be the audience that would consume the film for what it truly is without the subtitles and the truth is I yearned to be accepted by my motherland… And I don’t think I could have dreamed of a better reception.
We had 3 sold out screenings. It was Jae-Hyun’s first time watching the film after 2.5 years and he became a celebrity during the festival as audiences raved about his peformance. It was the first reunion with all our actors since the shoot began too. Sein Jin who was only 8 during the shoot grew so tall. Da-Nu Nam is now in film school wanting to DP like Jaryl Lim. Jae-Hyun who was retired from the pains of the industry, has decided to make a come back.
Nach, Mayumi came from Canada. Korean friends and colleagues including my @studio.paranoid fam made the far 3+ hour trip from Seoul to support despite their busy schedules and suddenly I realized I wasn’t so alone in Korea after all.
I love you all.

Springtime in Seoul 2025
New worlds, minds, inspirations from friends and strangers. Newfound family in @studio.paranoid. I want to keep growing like a weed through cracks of concrete. 🌱
I’ll return to Vancouver soon. Seoul too. Much love!

@tallinnblacknightsff (Pimedate Ööde filmifestival / PÖFF) opens today and I’m thrilled that @mongrels.film will make its international premiere as part of the debut First Feature Competition 🐺
There’s a saying in the film — “Dreams are opposite of reality” and it felt so true in the moment I received the invitation as the festival’s email notification woke me up from a terrible dream in the middle of the night. In my half-awake daze I looked at the phone and it took a few minutes for my brain to register that it was real. I stared and read over the invitation letter an unhealthy amount of times to cement it into reality and convince myself it to be true.
Only a week away! I’m excited to travel to Estonia shortly to reunite with the team and present the film to the Estonian and global audience at the festival.
See you next soon, PÖFF!
Tickets available now 🎟️ (link in bio)
Screenings @ Apollo Kino Coca-Cola Plaza
* November 16 - 18:30
* November 17 - 18:30
* November 23 - 21:45
