Your new favourite samurai movie, BUSHIDO, tells the story of Kakunoshin, who is framed for a crime and forced into exile. Years later, he stumbles across the true reason for his fall from grace and sets about exacting his revenge.
Along with the epic battles and swordplay you'd expect from a samurai flick, this work is unlike others, in that the psychological and moral battles are every bit as compelling as the action, thanks to the high calibre, intentional craftsmanship, confident storytelling and imposing performances.
Screening May 22 to 28, get your tickets at viff.org/whats-on.
A funny history film? These kinds of works are few and far between, but soon, FIUME O MORTE! screens at the VIFF Centre.
A popular title at #VIFF2025, FIUME O MORTE! returns to our screens, moving between absurdist re-enactments and documented record, telling the story of the Croatian city of Rijeka.
A delightfully unconventional hybrid documentary that explores the often untold story of the Italian poet and proto-fascist Gabriele D’Annunzio, who seized the city known in Italian as Fiume in 1919.
Get your tickets for May 22 to 28 at viff.org/whats-on.
This month marks the 100th birthday of jazz icon Miles Davis, whose discography has filled our homes with sweet, sweet music for decades.
To recognize this musical milestone, on May 24 at the VIFF Cinema, local trumpet legend Vince Mai will be performing music from some of Miles’ most memorable 1950s albums. Post-performance, we'll screen Stanley Nelson’s definitive documentary MILES DAVIS: BIRTH OF THE COOL, a fascinating biographical portrait of the artist offering a whole new perspective.
Clip from Live in Sweden with The Miles Davis Quintet performing ROUND MIDNIGHT, Fall of '67.
Starring Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE) and Léa Seydoux (BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR, SPECTRE), SILENT FRIEND is a singular meditation on how we connect to the natural world, and to each other.
On the grounds of a medieval German university town looms an imposing Ginkgo biloba, a tree whose longevity stands in marked contrast to three intimate, human-scaled stories. In 1908, the university’s first female student (Luna Wedler) gains admission into the prestigious botany department, confronting the sexism of both professors and peers. In 1972, amidst counterculture movements, a reserved student (Enzo Brumm) finds his attention captured by a fellow housemate and the geranium plant she studies. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a neuroscientist from Hong Kong (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai) secures the help of a renowned botanist (Léa Seydoux) for an experiment on the old ginkgo tree.
Featured at #VIFF2025, SILENT FRIEND returns to VIFF screens from May 22-29. Tickets at viff.org.

Using found Super 8 footage, local filmmaker Jennifer Chiu explores the history of the Hakka culture in CLAN OF THE PAINTED LADY.
In this engrossing documentary, presented here for Asian Heritage Month, director Jennifer Chiu reaches into her family’s history to explore the Hakka — a people, a language, and a culture. Thought to hail from the north of China, the Hakka settled in the south of the country, where they were known as the “guest people”.
In the face of social marginalization, many of them dispersed to places such as Mauritius, India, Jamaica, and Canada — including BC’s Lower Mainland, where Chiu spent much of her childhood.
If you missed it at #VIFF2025, see CLAN OF THE PAINTED LADY with a special Q&A from the director herself on Saturday, May 23 at 2:00PM. Tickets at viff.org.
Co-presented with the Chinese Canadian Museum.
