October 18th, 2024 - release date for @samorapinderhughes
💿: VENUS SMILES NOT IN THE HOUSE OF TEARS

2016- Samora, a free-spirited and highly skilled pianist and songwriter asked me to join him at rockwood music hall to play some original tunes with him. I didn’t know what to expect but it was a raw and heartfelt performance- everyone did their thing… but then Samora got up and sang a song while he accompanied himself at the piano… he’d never sung in front of an audience before and was only doing so because the vocalist that night bailed last minute. It was meant to be. That song was entitled “process”- it gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes. You could feel the air in the room change.

After that, Samora and I would get together countless times at my apartment or studio to just.. play… create… share. Sometimes I’d make beats to send him and he’d come back weeks later with these gut wrenching words, melodies, and harmony that tied it all together so perfectly. He was tapped in and was grateful to be along for the ride.

We took songs into the studio and chipped away for years, building, and then breaking, and then building again, -over and over in til we pieced together recordings that reflected something real. The whole process of creating this album taught me so much, not just about making a record, but about what music, and art, can reveal. We’ve shared something SO REAL and SO PERSONAL with these songs, that- even after chipping away at them for so long and hearing every iteration countless times- I’m still relating to and learning from the words.

I hope that, even if it’s just one person (and I know it’s already more than just one 😉) someone gains some peace, love, understanding, acceptance, forgiveness- of self - of others —however you interpret the music. It’s for you.

There are incredible musicians and engineers that worked on this album. Thank you to each and every one of them. ❤️

Thank you, Samo, for your trust and bravery. You are an astonishingly inspiring human!

My new song & video “SLOW TIME” is out now, from my upcoming album “VENUS Smiles Not in the House of Tears”. This song is a conversation I needed to have. I hope it’s useful for yall too, if you’ve ever had days where it’s felt hard to be alive. We love you & we need you here!!!

“SLOW TIME” is a conversation with death. In this state, every day you decide to talk back to that entity and tell them you won’t submit, is a day of triumph.
It comes in many forms & many fears.

This song/video is dedicated to all those who have dealt with depression and suicidal ideation - we’re so happy you’re staying around, we need you in this world!! I dealt with it a lot in my past and still deal with depression to this day, and building the tools and the kindness towards myself that was needed has taken a long time but it’s worth it!
I’m here to talk with whoever listens to this and feels like they need support!! ❤️

VENUS Smiles Not in the House of Tears - my new album - comes out on October 18th.
Pre-order for the vinyl is available now via link in bio.

I can’t wait for you all to live with these songs. @jackdeboe and I worked together on this album, on&off, for the past 7 years, and now it’s time to give them over to you.

This cover is so special because it features a painting by one of my greatest ever inspirations, @glennligon . The piece is “Figure #23” (2009, Acrylic, silkscreen, & coal dust on canvas.)
While making this album, I looked at Glenn’s work so often to inspire me and inspire these stories.
So much of this album is about complexity and the layered reality of being a human being - all the things we usually obscure in public, but that affect us so much.
Striving for the deepest commitment to honesty in the music. that’s reflected in the visuals and this piece means the world to me in its detail, emotion and brilliance.

Many thanks also to my incredible creative director @s_ariza who spent many hours working on this cover concept with me!! And to @nrg.visuals for this beautiful photography, and @adedehye for the jacket!. And to @i_jsax my manager /best friend / right hand, for the endless work on this. And to @pretty_good_cloud_day_ for putting out this record with me with such intention.

More soon.

For now, I hope you’ll all listen to the first single “Better”, pre-order the vinyl, pre-save the album, and prepare to have these deep conversations together!!

Love is the search.

VENUS SMILES NOT IN THE HOUSE OF TEARS so let’s work through it all together.
