오늘은 제 생일이에요!

일 년 중 364일은 생일 파티를 꿈꾸며 기다리지만, 막상 당일이 되면 무조건 행복해야 한다는 압박감에 압도당하곤 해요. 마치 감정을 강요받는 것 같고 부자연스럽게 느껴져서 머릿속이 멍해지죠. 그럴 땐 차라리 세상으로부터 도망쳐 숨어버리는 게 더 안전하게 느껴져요.

마음 깊은 곳을 들여다보니, 제 안의 완벽주의자가 모든 걸 휘두르고 있었나 봐요. 이 그림처럼 평생 절 그저 게으른 쓰레기라고 생각하며 살았으니까요.

작년 8월에 시작한 작업인데, 어떤 날은 붓을 잡는 것조차 너무 힘들어서 바라만 보기도 했어요. 스스로를 실망시킬까 봐, 그리고 나 자신과 예술 앞에 사기꾼인 게 들통날까 봐 두려웠고, 그 두려움이 미루는 습관이 됐어요.

가끔은 이게 정말 좋아서 하는 열정인지, 아니면 오기로 하는 건지 잘 모르겠어요. 어떤 식으로든 결과물을 ‘해내야만’ 내가 이 삶을 살 가치가 있다는 걸 증명할 수 있을 것 같아서요.

하지만 그 무엇으로도 이 공허함을 채울 수 없다는 걸 알아요. 알면서도 계속 반복하게 돼요. 그래서 이번에는 스스로에게 관대해지기로 했어요. 나에게 ‘괜찮다‘고 말해주기로 했죠.

이 그림은 영원히 완성되지 않을 거예요. 하지만 오늘은 이 정도면 충분해요. 오늘의 나는 이만하면 충분하니까요. 여러분도 마찬가지구요.
