WATCH NOW on Field of Vision: Sandcastles by Carin Leong

As Singapore imports sand for urban expansion, a ghost town bearing its name lies buried underneath sand on the other side of the world. Sandcastles parallels two Singapores: one in Michigan where mass deforestation in the 1800s stirred surrounding sand dunes to swallow it whole, while its namesake in the East emerged from sand by reclaiming what was once only marshland and water.

Through a poetic and mythological approach, the ephemeral nature of sand underscores humankind’s fraught relationship with the element: how can we trust the very ground we walk on when it’s built with and destroyed by nothing more than sand?

Directed by Carin Leong (@carinleong)
Produced by Carin Leong, Martin Loh (@martinlohh), James Qiu (@james.t.qiu), Jaydn Ray Gosselin (@jaydn.gosselin) & Jacob Fertig (@jacobfertig)

We’re really excited to announce the world premiere @raindancefilmfestival of Free Lyric, a new short by @cherishoteka nominated in the best short documentary competition.

4 years in the making, we’re so proud that it’ll finally be seen by an audience.

Set against the rise of social media, Free Lyric revisits one of rap culture’s earliest viral moments: the public shaming of a 17-year-old female rapper after a sexual confession spreads online. Through Niki’s story, the film explores gender, consent, and the early roots of online call-out culture — telling the story of a young woman who was cancelled before “being cancelled” was even a thing.

Bringing together dramatisations, archive, and observational material as Niki attempts a comeback, the film challenges our assumptions and complicity in social media scandals.

We’re incredibly grateful to @fieldofvision for their trust in us over these years, and for backing this ambitious film. Produced by Fleecey and I Am Charlie, in association with @darepictures_ , @intermission_film and @inmaatfoundation . Massive thanks to our execs Derren Lawford @charlottecook @rebeccafanya @sam_cryer and also to @womenmakemovies for their support.

Thanks to our crew especially @dopdaniel_ @jamilamelbourne and Maria Marrone and to the amazing cast of actors represented by @bazantalentagency .

Most of all thanks to Niki for trusting us with your story.

We can’t wait for everyone to see the film. It screens Thursday June 18th at 245pm and Friday June 19th at 1pm, both at Vue Piccadilly. Tickets available now!

Spanning Taipei, Taiwan, and New Jersey, Light of the Setting Sun explores identity, gender roles, and whether or not healing can break the cycle for future generations.

The film premieres on Independent Lens next Monday, May 18, at 10/9c, and will be available to stream on the @PBS app through August 15.

Riotsville, U.S.A. by Sierra Pettengill is now streaming on The Criterion Channel!

Using training footage of Army-built model towns called “Riotsvilles,” where military and police were trained torespond to civil disorder, in addition to nationally broadcast news media, director @sierrapett connects the stagecraft of “law and order” to the real violence of state practice. Recovering an obscured history whose effects have shaped the present in ways both insidious and explosive, Riotsville, U.S.A. is a poetic and furious reflection on the rebellions of the 1960s—and the machine that worked to destroy them.

Nuestra Tierra opens this Friday, May 1, at @FilmForumNYC!

In her first documentary feature, acclaimed Argentine filmmaker Lucrecia Martel takes a sweeping approach to this tragic true story, triangulating the murder trial of three men, the lives of activist Chocobar and his fellow Chuchagasta people, and the centuries-old, colonialist legacy of land and property theft across Latin America.
