Since Winter 2024 from Paris to Nepomuceno in Minas Gerais, Brazil we’ve been close to the story of @carlajuacaba and @milenadealmeidarodrigues. The story of a place, of a community, of a piece of a land and of a movement.
Centuries of extractive culture have not only devastated the environment but entrenched social inequities. Unpredictable and extreme weather events are further threatening livelihoods in the countryside. Despite a brutal history and ever-precarious present, there is a movement in the country towards regenerative agriculture and reforestation.
“With an Acre” narrates the days of Juaçaba’s search for an essential set of gestures in solidarity with @flordecafebr - a movement of agrarian reform and forest conservation, to provide a practical scaffold for resilience, as well as a symbolic stage of resistance.
Thanks to all the people and the teams who’ve allowed us to narrate a story inspired by the temporality of Indigenous collective structures and finding the form of highway billboards that mark the extended rural landscape in the region.
Thanks to @carlajuacaba @milenadealmeidarodrigues #IreneChin @j_88_f @iris.ng.cinematographer @camillelp1089 @n10ee @jmbusquetss @igor.sci @anhtg @sebastien_lariviere_101 @alyson_dr #HIT Berlin @olivier.goulet @juli_albani @eliasnafaa @allypereiraedwards #MarinaOba @silasmarti @institutoterraoficial @sebastiaosalgadooficial @boragio and many many others. And of course to the @grahamfoundation for the support.
“With an Acre” is the third and concluding chapter of Groundwork, a @canadiancentreforarchitecture three-part film and exhibition series exploring the conceptual development and field research of contemporary activists, architects, filmmakers and artists cultivating alternative modes of space making practice.
On display at @canadiancentreforarchitecture Montreal till September 14th.

Last April we opened in Montreal the exhibition “Oscillating Spaces” curated by @anneke__abhelakh with curatorial assistant @lauraparicio
The show looks to the Rhône Glacier—undergoing fast melting and transformation processes—as a case study to reflect on environmental challenges in a constantly oscillating site. Juxtaposing glacier cartography, photography, film, contemporary art works and projects, ecclesiastical documents, tourist souvenirs, and architectural archives, the exhibition questions the role of space making practices when confronted with a shifting climate, an unstable landscape, and a site that possesses a life of its own. The research documents the Alpine landscape, responding to and raising awareness about the complex consequences of glacier recession for plant, animal, and human life.

We just finished shooting in Brazil the third film of the @canadiancentreforarchitecture #GROUNDWORK series. Directed by filmmaker @j_88_f the episode will follow @carlajuacaba at the heart of Minas Gerais where she is developing pavilions in a coffee field facing dramatic challenges due to climate crisis - they are minimal support structures in a territory with collectives resisting extractive industrial agriculture.
More soon!

How can we design law? How can we redefine the territories within which we can imagine to make space today? In a moment in which social and ecological crises are undermining and threatening the existence of a multiplicity of human and non-human beings across territories and geographies questions of whether or not to build, or how to intervene on the built environment are more crucial than ever.
Throughout Spring, Summer and Fall 2024 we had the pleasure to follow - through the eyes of film director Joshua Frank @j_88_f - the collective of architects and activists of @bplus.xyz @olafgrawert, #ArnoBrandlhuber @robertajurcic @jonas_janke @jolenelee___ with @kolinaalar (Berlin) and @station.plus (Zurich) - during various phases of conceptualization and development of a European Citizens’ Initiative @houseeurope.eu meant to incentivize renovation over the speculative dynamics of demolition and new construction.
Through this bottom-up legal tool, space making practices become an open process of establishing partners, drafting legislation, filming stories, strategizing communications, coordinating campaigns, collecting votes, and building a movement of protest.
It has been such a pleasure to work with all the teams of architects, lawyers, politicians, activists, filmmakers, artists, urban planners and students involved across Berlin, Zurich and the whole Europe to produce the documentary and the exhibition “To Build Law” (2024) - the second chapter of the Groundwork series on display at the CCA Montreal now.
Here in sequence just few fragments of a long story. More to come! And see you at CCA in Montreal till May 25th 2025.
Huge thanks to the magic filming crew with @iris.ng.cinematographer @kaylafragman @_guanni @pascalcapitolin @etiennehaug and CCA Producer @camillelp1089 and @canadiancentreforarchitecture teams with #IreneChin @anhtg @sebastien_lariviere_101 @alyson_dr @juli_albani @olivier.goulet and @eliasnafaa @emiliezephiseretailleau

Two years ago with Angirramut / Ruovttu Guvlui / Towards Home (2022) an exhibition curated by artists @joarnango and #TaqralikPatridge and curators @joccipi and @rafico.ruiz - we investigated how Inuit, Sámi, and other communities across the Arctic are creating self-determined spaces that rely on land-based practices. The show has been traveling from Montreal to @uoftdaniels across 2023 & 2024 - and it’s now a great book as well, produced with the key editorial work by @allypereiraedwards and @albert_ferre_
Published by @canadiancentreforarchitecture and @valiz_books_projects - and soon ready to be launched at @wag_ca in Winnipeg.

Join the Canadian Centre for Architecture at e-flux Screening Room on Saturday, October 5 at 5pm for Film as Curatorial Tool, an afternoon with selected documentaries produced by the CCA in conjunction with exhibitions exploring topics of quality of life, urban development and decay, and ecological design. The screening will be followed by a conversation with e-flux Associate Curator of Film Lukas Brasiskis @lukasbrasiskis and e-flux Architecture Assistant Editor Christina Moushoul @christinamoushoul, who will be joined by CCA curators Francesco Garutti @fgarutti and Irene Chin, on the use of film in spatial studies and storytelling. The program will be introduced by guest curator Sara Silva @sarasps.
@canadiancentreforarchitecture is an international research institution and museum founded in 1979 on the conviction that architecture is a public concern. April 24th 1970 - Alanis Obomsawin to Mr Vic Adams National Film Board Ottawa Ontario, CANADA
“Dear Mr. Adams -
In the past there has been no effort made to tell children in school - what the history of Indian people of this country really is - I’ll not mention the past anymore than in these few lines -
We Indian people want very much to tell it ourselves - We don’t want anyone to speak on our behalf anymore - (…)”
Congratulations to #HilaPeleg & #RichardWilliamHill for such an intense show on activist filmmaker and producer Alanis Obomsawin life, work and powerful thought.

Around one year ago @j_88_f started shooting “Into the Island” the first documentary of the @canadiancentreforarchitecture #Groundwork film and exhibition series. Since then the project has been following #XuTiantian along the coasts of Meizhou Island, where ideas for a diffused life museum and a series of precise environmental interventions were conceived in dialogue with and in service to villagers, fisherfolks, and experts in marine biology.
The film and the exhibition are on display in our galleries in #Montreal till November 17 2024.
