Mason White, an award-winning scholar and designer, has been appointed dean of #uoftdaniels.

A faculty member at Daniels since 2005, White is an expert in architecture, urban design and the relationship between architecture, environment and society – with a focus on cold climates.

He will assume his new role on July 1, 2026 for a five-year term. His appointment was approved Wednesday following an extensive international search.

“Having taught here for 20 years already, it is an incredible honour to have the opportunity to support our students, faculty and staff as they pursue even greater heights,” said White. “I’m really excited for the challenge ahead and for the future of this faculty, which brings together a remarkable diversity of perspectives across disciplines and practices.”

White is renowned for his research, architecture and design work in cold environments and across scales – from individual buildings to entire cities and regions. A founding partner of @lateraloffice, an interdisciplinary design practice, White often collaborates with Indigenous partners on community‑empowering research and design projects.

He has held several leadership roles at Daniels, including director of the master of architecture (MArch) and master of urban design (MUD) programs, as well as the post-professional master of architecture and master of landscape architecture (MLA) programs.

✨✨✨Introducing the 2026 Graduating MVS in Curatorial Studies Student Exhibitions

Blind Spot, curated by Gia Liapi (@gia_lp), explores the potential of finding new uses for the tools already in our hands. Little and Often, curated by Chloe Gordon-Chow (@chloegchow), traces relationships to land, material, and community within disturbed landscapes and conditions of precarity Working with seeds, soils, mushrooms, and plants, the artists in this exhibition foreground resilience as a collective and relational practice that continues to shift under constraint. Featuring works by Maureen Gruben (@icegallerytuk), Rachel Crummey (@crum_crum), Miguel Caba (@miguellcaba), Rana Nazzal Hamadeh (@rananazzalh), and Meech Boakye (@ghostyboi) & Bhavika Sharma (@fibre_graft).

One large drawing per group. Alongside their physical creations, each team of students was tasked with producing an ambitiously layered hybrid drawing in Tools for Close Observation at @uoftdaniels. The drawings combine scan data with annotations, measurements and collage among other layers. All work by undergraduate Daniels students.

Nicholas Hoban #uoftalumni is a computational designer, roboticist, fabricator and educator. He works at the intersection of computational design, robotics, construction and simulation in pedagogy, research and practice. In addition to being a lecturer, he is the director of applied technologies at #uoftdaniels, where he oversees one of the country's most advanced fabrication environments.

When the time came for Hoban to build the Daniels fabrication lab several years ago, he knew exactly what to do. He was part of the inaugural cohort to graduate with a master of advanced studies (@ethzurich) in architecture and digital fabrication. 🦾

The National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication is Switzerland’s initiative to lead the development and integration of digital technologies within the fields of architecture and construction. Initiated at ETH Zurich, https://dfab.ch is partnered with multiple institutions across Switzerland.

Final photographs from the student project shared yesterday. Work by @chlolee__ @minah__.bae0629 Yunqi Guan and Zhiyan Zhou for our final project Inventive Relationships. The project is geared towards unusual and unpredictable outcomes, with students encouraged to derive their finished forms from a close reading of specific pieces of material. A slow and step by step process that skips out on drawing the finished forms first.

First launched in 2023, the IDEAS Impact Award initiative is a collaborative endeavour of the three Daniels student unions @uoft.avssu, @galdsu.uoft and @fgsa_uoft. This peer-recognition award seeks to recognize Daniels students for their contributions towards advancing Inclusion, Decolonial work, Equity, Accessibility and Sustainability at #uoftdaniels or in external communities.

Nominations were reviewed by the Student Impact Award Committee, which was composed of representatives from the student unions and the Office of the Assistant Dean, Equity Diversity and Inclusion. The mandate of the selection committee is to help Daniels advance values of equity and inclusion by ensuring that the candidates selected meet or exceed the award criteria.

In addition to the Impact Fellows, this year’s process also included an IDEAS identity mark competition (➡️ slide 2 ). The selected design was created by third-year BAAS student Ivan Tsang (Specialist in architectural studies, comprehensive stream).

This year’s Impact Fellows join the 2023 inaugural cohort and carry the lifetime title of Impact Award Fellow and grow the network of students recognize by their peers as social impact advocates and change makers. 🙌🏽

Read more about 2026 Impact Award Fellows, Ashneet Sachdeva and Minghan Wei, and read Tsang's artist statement at https://uoft.me/IDEAS-2026 or visit our link in bio. 🔗

As part of @Doors_OpenTO, #uoftdaniels welcomes visitors for public tours on May 23 & 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. While you're here, our End of Year Show 2025/26 will feature a wide range of projects produced in our architecture, forestry, landscape architecture, urban design and visual studies programs.

The Toronto Society of Architects (@tosoarch) will also host a hands‑on kids activity each day, plus a special discussion on Toronto’s architectural identity on Sunday (3:00 p.m.) in the Daniels Building Main Hall.

The land of 1 Spadina Crescent has been the home and an important trail of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishinaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples. Spadina is synonymous with Ishpadinaa, meaning "a place on a hill" in Anishinaabe.

See you at #DOT26!
