Ahead of her concert on May 29th, we hopped on the train from Schiedam to Amsterdam and chatted with @yannapelser about her and what she's working on.
For BIMHUIS Productions' upcoming REFLEX assignment, composer and viola player Yanna Pelser has sculpted a concert around 'the song'. Yanna's practice is firmly rooted in classical music, and her music can grow into complex shapes and forms, but at the end of the day, simple catchy melodies stay with her the most.
For REFLEX, Yanna moves between catchy pop songs, chaotic improvisation, and precisely composed pieces. “A marriage of the music of Joni Mitchell, Hermeto Pascoal, and Arnold Schönberg.” And, for the occasion, she invites songbirds from various corners of the globe: @evi.feelippou, @hvnarvesen, @dodokis, @jordicarrascohjelm & @jelleroozenburg.

Veslemøy Narvesen - a nightingale from
Norway, singing tenderly and beautifully at
night, hitting her drums wildly by day. Her
songs make you lift up in your dreams until
you find yourself flying above the most
glorious and touching landscapes.

Evi Filippou - a robin from Greece with a
huge vocabulary echoing over birdland.
With joyful lightness, she hops from
branch to vibraphone to drums to voice. Not shying away for interaction, this free bird will improvise with everyone she meets during her flight. @evi.feelippou

Dodó Kis - a blue jay from Hungary, using
her recorders as magic sticks and twiggs
to build a great nest of all the possible
sounds you can imagine. Always hungry
for adventure, she is an early bird
experimenting across multiple fields and beyond.
@dodokis

Jordi Carrasco Hjelm - a half Swedish, half
Chilean blackbird with an astonishing
repertoire in his wings ranging from folk to classical to dadaïsm. Singing with his
double bass by day, at night he scribbles
down the most wonderful poems in the
bast of a tree.
@jordicarrascohjelm

Jelle Roozenburg - a yellow wagtail from
sweet lake city (Zoetermeer) who
manoevers through the forest of music
with the greatest agility. Often hiding
behind the leaves, he invents the most
colorful symphonies while his guitar gently
weeps.
@jelleroozenburg

Yanna Pelser - a starling from Holland who
is constantly migrating from genre to
genre with her viola on her back. Known to
be a good listener, she feeds off the
stories of all creatures she meets on her
way. Her song pallet is as rich as her multi-
colored feathers.
