This season of What’s Contemporary Now is about the questions that define us, at work, in life, and in everything that powers the two.

THE CASE FOR DISRUPTION BY CULTURE DIRECTOR-AT-LARGE CHRISTOPHER MICHAEL FOR BEYOND NOISE ISSUE 3.
@thebeyondnoise available to purchase link in bio or select retailers worldwide.
Fashion’s most transformative moments have rarely come from within the establishment—they’ve been driven by the outsiders, the iconoclasts, the ones who dared to defy the script. From Balenciaga’s sculptural purity to Dapper Dan’s Harlem remix of luxury, history shows that true innovation begins at the margins. But in a system increasingly defined by scale, speed, and spectacle, how do emerging designers cut through the noise? In our latest issue, writer @chrimichael traces the legacy of disruption in fashion—and asks whether the industry still has space for its next generation of visionaries to grow.
“The rules that once seemed fixed are already beginning to shift, bending under the weight of necessity and creative will. What we’re witnessing may not be a breakdown but a breakthrough—an inflection point from which a more daring, inclusive, and imaginative fashion future will emerge.” - Christopher Michael.

Given the state of the world, it’s hard not to analyze everything these days. Fashion and culture are constantly dissected and decoded through reviews and critiques, and the minute breakdown of their lexicon and influence on identity. Nadia Lee Cohen offers a refreshing antidote to that noise, often creating work made with equal parts conviction, subversion, and whimsy. Outside of the incredible self portraiture, her conversation with Gaspard Noé presents the kind of unfiltered exchange we’re in the mood for.

Grace and serenity are two incredibly fitting words to describe the legendary editor Carla Sozzani. After first interviewing her sister, the late Franca Sozzani, in Paris several years ago—a memory that remains one of my favorites to this day—it was an absolute honor to spend time with Carla this season at her office within the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation. She moves through conversation just as she does a room: with a gliding gait that reflects her long-standing place in creative aristocracy, and entirely without pretense.
“You have to be convinced you have something to say.”

While rigid historicism can be stifling, a future without context is nothing less than diminished. Linda Evangelista’s inherent obsession with quality, creativity, and always raising the bar is the quintessence of traditions worth keeping.
The iconic supermodel joins me for DUST CHINA to reflect on the making of her prolific career, the incredible memories of her trips to the country, and the unwavering love she has for her work and supporting the emerging talents of today. Her advice on remaining anchored in oneself while even the most ordinary person might feel the pressures of social media’s critical eye is a valuable piece of wisdom that feels pertinent to the times.
“We were living in the moment at all times, and we didn’t think about what other people were doing or if they were going to like it.”

While fashion has become culture’s greatest Trojan horse, it’s only natural that there should be a show exploring both the contemporary landscape and modern-day human experience through its lens.
In our upcoming season, we’ve lined up extraordinary guests, including a Pulitzer Prize-winning fashion critic, a brand founder who could give a masterclass on how to do it right and win at life, and award-winning designers, magazine editors, and cultural icons, both established and new.
Subscribe now on Spotify or Apple Podcasts and tune in for new episodes starting Monday, May 27 with @palomija, @itboygregk, @kegrand, @robingivhan, @dara._, @suzannekoller #PierreRougier, @zoeghertner, @willahbennett, @eriktorstensson, @daphneguinness and many more.

There are times in life when days feel like different versions of the same thing, and there are moments that stand out in ways where you know they will become long-lasting memories. Convincing a reluctant Vanessa Friedman to sit for a cover story, while she is used to being the one writing them, was certainly the latter.
Thank you, Sarah Richardson, for the opportunity, Tonne Goodman for the grace and brilliance while we circumvented a few hurdles along the way, and Michael Bailey Gates for the beautiful portraiture.

When we first asked the question, “What is contemporary now?” we thought it made sense to explore the makings of culture by tapping into the varied perspectives of creatives whose work has helped shape the contemporary landscape. This season sees that dream continue, having the chance to speak to a master on the intersection of technology and image making and a brilliant young artist on the recontextualization of queer black culture. We explore how creatives lead successful luxury brands and even tap into the important role of the critic as a lighthouse amidst oceans of information.
