Grace and serenity are two incredibly fitting words to describe the legendary editor Carla Sozzani. After first interviewing her sister, the late Franca Sozzani, in Paris several years ago—a memory that remains one of my favorites to this day—it was an absolute honor to spend time with Carla this season at her office within the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation. She moves through conversation just as she does a room: with a gliding gait that reflects her long-standing place in creative aristocracy, and entirely without pretense.

When we first asked the question, “What is contemporary now?” we thought it made sense to explore the makings of culture by tapping into the varied perspectives of creatives whose work has helped shape the contemporary landscape.
