// How can historical museums address the environmental and social histories embedded in their collections? How do they engage with existing ideas about domination and extinction? 🌱

Curator @anna_bitkina asked herself these questions when she first encountered the palace. With State of Wander, she explores, together with artists, how we view the relationship between humans and nature from a Western perspective. Contemporary artworks addressing themes such as power, slavery and climate are displayed throughout the palace and its grounds.

🎧 With the State of Wander podwalk, @cathelijneblok guides you past these artworks, sharing the stories behind them.

The grand opening of “State of Wander: Towards Environmental Restoration” took place a
few weeks ago at Paleis Het Loo @paleishetloo, and I’m still recovering from the excitement and exhaustion—it was intense and incredibly fun!

The palace’s refined and formal interiors seemed to come alive, filled with sound, breath, movement, new scents, and artistic forms unusual for these spaces. A new crowd of visitors took over the museum during the opening, and new energy flowed through the institution’s arteries.

Thank you to everyone who came to the opening—friends, colleagues, family! And thank you to the team at Paleis Het Loo for their trust and incredible support in bringing the exhibition together. It has been a long journey, one that will hopefully continue.

A special thank you, of course, to all the artists for their stunning works:

1. Gayatri Kodikal, "Searching for Lost Seeds", augmented reality experience, textile
objects, video

2. Edward Clydesdale Thomson with stichting landfall, "home/host", animatronic sculpture

3. Caitlin Berrigan, “1,311 Diamonds”, sculpture and sound installation

4. Marianna Maruyama, “Diana”, perfumes, book

5. Antye Guenther, “Sault of Interest”, ceramic installation

6. Jan Christian Schulz, “Biophony of Het Loo”, live-broadcasting installation, video

7. Terike Haapoja in collaboration with Genesis Victoria, “Foreign Beasts And Other Rarities”, immersive audio tour, video

8. Bryony Dunne, ‘Tables of Power”, sugar-based sculpture, video

9. Clemens Driessen and Teodora Cecilia Buccilli, “Unboxing the Sovereign Gaze”, perspective box

10. Rob Voerman, ‘W”, sculptural construction

The exhibition is made possible thanks to:

few weeks ago at Paleis Het Loo @paleishetloo, and I’m still recovering from the excitement and exhaustion—it was intense and incredibly fun!

Diana the goddess cannot be captured nor easily traced. And yet, with this aromatic sculpture, I didn't anticipate that people would start looking for her so soon.

Diana is one of two sculptures I've installed in Paleis Het Loo in Apeldoorn, in the exhibition 'State of Wander: Towards Environmental Restoration' guest curated by Anna Bitkina @anna_bitkina

Three roughly hewn, solid, old oak plinths, sourced from the nearby forest, suggest a missing or invisible presence amidst the white marble halls of the museum's newly renovated Grand Foyer. There's only a trace in our midst, a suggestion of an entity who may have just left the room.

The exhibition runs until September 27th. Guided curatorial tours in English and Dutch are scheduled throughout the period, and much more info can be found on the Paleis Het Loo website.

I'm pleased to show work amongst the artists and researchers @bryonymaydunne @gayatrikodikal @terike.haapoja @edwardclydesdale @caitlinberrigan @antye.guenther @voermanr Clemens Driessen and Teodora Cecilia Buccilli, and Jan Christian Schulz.

Supported by Paleis Het Loo and @mondriaanfonds

With gratitude to all who made this possible

This beauty came out of print yesterday. Book about Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, protector of forests and animals, and a key figure at Paleis Het Loo, originally a hunting estate. Written by Marianna Maruyama @thesetwentyoneletters and designed by @cleotsw the book comes with two original perfumes to invoke and restore the much-needed presence of Diana within the palace and in the imagination.
Thanks to dear Paul Rem @paulhenkrem for the guidance through the history of hunting and its symbolism at the palace, pointing at the extensive representation of Diana in the interiors and exteriors of Paleis Het Loo.

Behind the scenes at Paleis Het Loo! Here I'm installing a scent-carrying sculpture in the historic living room of the controversial figure & husband of Queen Juliana, Prins Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld (1911-2004).

One of the most enthusiastic hunters in the royal family, Prins Bernhard displayed his animal trophies in this very room. Online, and in the palace archives, it's easy to find photos of him proudly posing with his just-killed leopards, elephants and other species.

My intervention here is not only visible. While you see me with a scent-carrying sculpture made of concrete, limestone and chrome, this artwork is best understood with the nose.

Imagining the residual aromatic aura of Prins Bernhard, keeping in mind his approach to hunting and the space he took, I've been given permission to install an olfactory work I've titled "Common Origin" in his living room in @paleishetloo in Apeldoorn. I'm grateful to Paleis Het Loo for trusting me with this subtle intervention and to @mondriaanfonds for supporting this.

The exhibition 'State of Wander: Towards Environmental Restoration' runs April 16-September 27. Curated by Anna Bitkina. @anna_bitkina

More soon, after the installation is complete next week.

"State of Wander" @paleishetloo is gradually coming together. What began as a research journey unfolds into a space of reflection, where historical collections become vessels for thinking through ecological loss and transformation. To understand the present, we are drawn back to the 16th century—to the beginnings of colonial expansion, extractive economies, and the reshaping of land, labor, and living worlds.

The process of making artworks is always neurotic, exciting, and magical. This has been the state of mind over the past months—shared with a group of wonderful individuals whose works will soon be scattered across the vast grounds of Het Loo and within the palace’s lavish historical rooms.

10 new commissions are taking shape: from a large-scale animatronic sculpture and an
interactive ecosystem to new perfumes, an immersive sound installation, an alternative museum audio tour, augmented reality experiences, sugar sculptures and more. Make sure to check it out!

Images of works in progress:
1. Gayatri Kodikal, "Searching for Lost Seeds", AR experience, a virtual entity as a part of the expansive digital installation found at the premises of Paleis Het Loo, 2025-2026
2. Bryony Dunne, “Tables of Power”, documentation of video shooting, 2026
3-4. Edward Clydesdale Thomson with stichting landfall, "home/host", animatronic sculpture, visualisation andresearch material, 2026
5. Terike Haapoja, "Foreign Beasts And Other Rarities", photographs, 2026
6. Marianna Maruama, “Diana”, book cover, 2026
7. Rob Voerman, artist sketch for project "W", sculptural construction, 2025

8. Clemens Driessen and Teodora Cicillia Buccilli, " Unboxing the Sovereign Gaze", prospective box, construction process, 2026

🌟 Something exciting is coming up! 🌟

For the past three years, I’ve been working as a guest curator at Paleis Het Loo @paleishetloo —a 17th-century palace and former summer residence of the Dutch Royal Family in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. Today, it’s a public historical museum with a fascinating and controversial collection that requires quite some rethinking and investigation.

This research unfolded under the project "State of Wander: Towards Environmental Restoration", which I initiated and have been leading in close collaboration with museum conservators and experts. The creative heart of the project is a remarkable cohort of artists and thinkers: Caitlin Berrigan, Edward Clydesdale Thomson with stichting landfall, Bryony Dunne, Clemens Driessen and Teodora Cecilia Buccilli, Antye Guenther, Terike Haapoja, Gayatri Kodikal, Marianna Maruyama, Jan Christian Schulz, Rob Voerman.

Through our collaborative research and production, we’ve created something truly special. The project sits at the intersection of heritage, contemporary art, and ecological thinking, questioning how Western museums shape our understanding of nature. It's also challenges the role of privileged royal classes in shaping colonial-capitalist world and instigating environmental degradation.

The first public moment is almost here! The opening is on April 16, 2026, and the exhibition runs from April 17–September 27, 2026, with some public program events along the way. Stay tuned—I can’t wait to share it with you!
