Three Minutes of Fine Art Conversation - Review from Art Basel 2025 visiting the booth of LANDAU FINE ART, and my husband Horst, Nissa (Landau Fine Art, Gallery manager in Montreal), and me in a wonderful conversation with Mrs. Landau about Mr. Werner Merzbacher #TheMerzbacherCollection in front of the masterwork ‚Spanische Tänzerin’ (Spanish Dancer), 1909, by Alexej von Jawlensky (1864 - 1941).
Oil on cardboard. Signed and dated in the upper left. 100 x 69,5 cm (39.3 x 27.3 in.). With the expressionist Murnau landscape on the reverse.
Lot 38, Auction 550 ‚Evening Sale‘, June 07, 2024 in Munich at Ketterer Kunst @kettererkunst.de @robertketterer_kettererkunst.
Estimate: € 7,000,000 / $ 8,120,000
Sold: € 8,338,000 / $ 9,672,080 to LANDAU FINE ART, Montreal (Canada).
Jawlensky‘s portraits from 1909 and 1910 are considered milestones of European Modernism. „Spanish Dancer“ - a masterpiece of unbridled expressionist quality, comparable to Jawlensky‘s famous „Portrait of the Dancer Aleksandr Sakharov“, 1909 (Courtesy of Städtische Galerie @lenbachhaus, Munich).
„There are only very few paintings by Alexej von Jawlensky showcasing this level of quality, and most of them have been museum-owned for many decades. […] The ‚Spanish Dancer‘ is one of those few exceptional Jawlensky paintings that have made for the artist‘s worldwide fame today, just as they caused a sensation and provided inspiration back then.“

Impression from the 375. Auction Preview „Selected Works“ Grisebach Berlin, last week in Frankfurt.
Max Beckmann (Leipzig 1884 - 1950 New York)
„Springbrunnen in Baden-Baden“, 1936.
Oil on canvas, 65 - 95 cm. On the cardboard backing labels of the exhibitions Stuttgart 2004 and Basel 2011/12. Catalogue raisonné: Tiedemann/Göpel MB-G442 (online catalogue raisonné). [107]. Framed.
Estimate: EUR 400,000 - 600,000 / USD 471,000 - 706,000
Lot 15 / Auction 375 „Selected Works“ by Grisebach Auctions, Thursday, 04.06.2026, 6:00 PM.
Beckmann’s „Springbrunnen in Baden-Baden“ (Fountain in Baden-Baden), painted in 1936, belongs to an important late German phase of Work - the years immediately before his exile from Nazi Germany.
This painting was created during Beckmann’s repeated stays in Baden-Baden between 1935 and 1937. These visits were partly for health reasons and partly a retreat from the increasingly oppressive political atmosphere in Berlin under the Nazi regime. In 1933 Beckmann had lost his teaching position at the Städelschule in Frankfurt after the Nazis came to power. Only a year after this painting, in 1937, he emigrated for 12 years to Amsterdam.
Because of this context, the Baden-Baden works are often interpreted not simply as landscapes or city scenes, but as psychologically charged images reflecting uncertainty, withdrawal, and inner tension.
Today, major collections of his work are held in:
@themuseumofmodernart
@metmuseum
@stlartmuseum
@staedel
And some works at @kunsthauszuerich #TheMerzbacherCollection
Thanks to Dr. Britta von Campenhausen @bvcffm having us at the preview in Frankfurt at @salonkennedy, and a huge thank you for the art catalogues!

‚Vibrations des Plantes‘ (Vibrations of Plants) presents new works by Swiss artist Barbara Ellmerer, whose practice is thoroughly devoted to the inner life of plants. The exhibitions featured works that emerge from the artist‘s seismographic perceptions: her brushwork transforms vibrations, flows, and condensations into layers of vibrating color.
Solo-exhibition from 17th March - 23rd May, 2026 at Gallery Andres Thalmann Paris, 70 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, 75008 Paris / @barbaraellmerer @galerieandresthalmannparis / @galerieandresthalmann Zürich.
Barbara Ellmerer (*1956), lives and works in Zürich, and is primarily associated with contemporary abstract painting. The œvre of Swiss artist Barbara Ellmerer combines a curiosity for natural science with an intensive exploration of the medium of painting. In her works, the artist alternates between perspectives - from the external appearance of a plant to its internal structures. The artist sometimes uses unusual painting media such as silver nitrate, varnish and fluorescent colours on canvas or paper. Where ductus and composition alone are no longer sufficient for the artist to depict these concentrated forces, she resorts, to the meansof the luminous colourfulness of a neon green or rose vif.

Into The Blue - We totally love this blue position by Hendrik Zimmer ‚Pani Puna‘, 2025.
Coloured wood block print on canvas, painter‘s frame, oak. 100 x 100 cm. Price on request. @galerieheikestrelow
Actually on show at Galerie Heike Strelow, Frankfurt am Main. @studiohendrikzimmer
„With modern art, the role of blue began to change. In Expressionism, artists used blue to express mood and inner states. […] In abstract art, the effect of blue often emerges through its nuances. Different shades of blue evoke associations such as calm, depth, or distance. […]“ - @galerieheikestrelow
Hendrik Zimmer was graduated in 2008 at Academy of Fine Art at Städelschule Frankfurt,@staedelmuseum with the title Meisterschüler / Master Student under Professor Tobias Rehberger @studio_tobias_rehberger.
‚Like a Painting by Sculpture‘ or ‚Painting through Sculpture’ was entitled a solo-exhibition in 2024 at Galerie Heike Strelow - Hendrik Zimmer (*1973) lives and works in Frankfurt am Main. With his foundation in sculpting, Zimmer quickly turned towards abstract painting by creating collages and décollages. He obtains materials like billboards, prints off street, collect books and newspapers with themes of his interest, bringing the outside world into his studio where he transforms it into large-formatted paintings. This involvesten to twelve layers of paint and paper, applied and removed, imprinted with recurring forms and symbols and then partially scraped off again.

Eric Mangen l Forever Wild Child
Eric Mangen, born 1983, lives and works in Luxembourg, is a contemporary abstract artist known for his energetic, large-scale paintings that merge gesture, material experimention, and controlled chaos. Mangen has worked internationally, with residences and exhibitions in the USA, Australia and across Europe, and now the painter’s first solo-exhibition in Germany at Galerie Heike Strelow from 19 February - 11 April 2026 / @ericmangen at @galerieheikestrelow.
His artistic approach is based on the creation of backgrounds on which, like collages, he perpetually constructs and deconstructs. He principally works in large formats, as this space enables him to express with free movement. Mangen‘s approach to abstraction has its roots in graffiti of the late 1990s.
The canvas becomes the site of action. In art history, this work connects to positions such as Jackson Pollock-like energy, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline.

MONETS COAST - The Discovery of Étretat
Great exhibition from 19. March to 5. July 2026 at Städel Museum in collaboration with the Musée des Beaux-Arts Lyon @staedelmuseum @mba_lyon @staedelverein.
The coast town of Étretat has become a myth - and continues to fascinate to this day. Its cliffs, located in Normandy on the Atlantic coast, captivated numerous artists in the 19th century. Claude Monet was so fascinated by their unique shapes and the three natural rock arches, who returned to this landscape again and again, painting the famous rock formations more than 80 times. Alongside Monet, the exhibition also features works by other important figures in modern and contemporary art, such as Gustave Courbet, Henri Matisse, Eugène Le Poittevin, Camille Corot, Eugène Boudin and Elger Esser, revealing how this unique place inspired generations of painters and shaped modern art.
