Now on view: Quiberville (Mémoires de paysages) by Eric Mangen
Join us today, 24 May, 11AM–6PM, in the presence of the artist.
Exhibition on view from 23 May – 18 July 2026
Nosbaum Reding Bruxelles
60, Rue de la Concorde
1050 Brussels
Eric Mangen’s brushstroke is quick and vigorous, its momentum fuelling the energy of the painting gesture. But just as with a horse’s gallop, as he explains, the reins must be loosened from time to time. This back-and-forth between restraint and letting go defines Mangen’s intuitive relationship with space and the canvas. To capture that fleeting impulse, he likes to stage compositional accidents, which he then evens out, softening the image by diluting the colours. Moistened papers and random drops of colour allow the materiality of the paint to unfold as drippings, which he keeps in check to make sure the fortuitous remains fortunate. For as the impulse quickly recedes, another process begins, where the improvised explosion and the chaos of the line give way to a moment of recovery designed to preserve what must be preserved.

Opening this Saturday: Eric Mangen - Quiberville (Mémoires de paysages)
Opening on Saturday, 23 May at 12.30 p.m.
On show from 23.05.2026 to 18.07.2026
Nosbaum Reding Brussels
60, Rue de la Concorde

« Mangen recreated from memory the shifting tones of the sky, the steep ridges of a rock face, the curve of a green hill and the crest of waves crashing against the rocks, which are highlighted with white chalk - white chalk derived directly from the pebbles gathered on the shore. The fact that the horizon line is inverted hardly matters. After all, the aim is to reveal the impressions left by landscape and the light, even if it means turning the painting on its head. These works, created without fixed rules, prioritize chromatic dynamics and the expressiveness of forms. Above all, through his sensitive brushwork, Mangen favors a simplicity of expression that allows him to merge with his surroundings. »

I’ve been working on bringing my ceramics closer to the environment I’m living in
This is my first large installation — a hand-built planter standing on willow branches I cut on the farm
Trying to let the materials speak to each other: clay, wood, and living plants
More to come 🌿

15 years ago, a friend took me to Art Brussels for the first time.
Today, I reached a very personal milestone.
I once dreamed of showing my work in this legendary building, surrounded by artists I’ve admired for so long. The art world is a strange and winding journey—but the dreams you hold really do shape the life you end up living.
Today, one of my small dreams came true.
Thanks @nosbaum.reding for the opportunity!

Eric Mangen (b. 1983, Luxembourg) is recognised for his dynamic and gestural approach to abstraction. His work is rooted in an unceasing curiosity and a constant drive for reinvention. His paintings unfold through a physical dialogue, where tension drives the rhythm and energy of his compositions. Mangen’s practice often bridges painting, performance, and installation, as he persistently challenges the limits of scale, surface, and technique.
Guided by an ever-renewed curiosity, he embraces new materials and processes to resist the comfort of repetition. His work reveals a visual language charged with energy, strength, and a sincerity of gesture.

Eric Mangen, born 1983, lives and works in Luxembourg, is a contemporary abstract artist known for his energetic, large-scale paintings that merge gesture, material experimention, and controlled chaos. Mangen has worked internationally, with residences and exhibitions in the USA, Australia and across Europe, and now the painter’s first solo-exhibition in Germany at Galerie Heike Strelow from 19 February - 11 April 2026 / @ericmangen at @galerieheikestrelow.
His artistic approach is based on the creation of backgrounds on which, like collages, he perpetually constructs and deconstructs. He principally works in large formats, as this space enables him to express with free movement. Mangen‘s approach to abstraction has its roots in graffiti of the late 1990s.
The canvas becomes the site of action. In art history, this work connects to positions such as Jackson Pollock-like energy, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline.
