Julian Polson returns to Respite for his second exhibition with FOZZA presents, sharing work remotely from Sydney and continuing to expand the dialogue between sound, vision and community. A music producer and new media artist, Julian is a pioneer in the sound and visual space. Their TouchDesigner and Resolume works are defined by vibrant colour palettes fused with early internet aesthetics, with interactivity and fluidity at the core of their design philosophy. They view visuals as active facilitators of expression and connection within dance environments, part of a dynamic, interconnected exchange of energy.

For Respite 2.0, Julian developed a loud visual identity inspired by individuality and community. Utilising an endless colour wheel, film-inspired aesthetics and magazine cut outs, their choice of textures adds an edge distinctive to Julian’s style. Julian has a deeply collaborative and inclusive approach, creating with people rather than for themselves, and fosters a shared ownership through immersive audiovisual experience. I’m very proud to be exhibiting his works here in Melbourne and although he can’t be present, his energy will still be felt through his art.

Lucian Rodriguez Lovell is a Filipino-Australian new media artist, game designer, and academic based in Naarm. Working critically with 3D materials, sensors, game worlds, and machine learning, Rodriguez Lovell works with and against technics to reclaim space, reveal glitches and thresholds of power, playfully subverting interfaces as a form of resistance. His work explores speculative computing futures, racial bias in artificial intelligence, and the in-betweenness of his Filipino-Australian heritage.

Their work titled “Silly Walk World” is a real-time 3D simulation speculating on a future where humans perform silly walks as a means to subvert gait surveillance and the datafication of the human body. Contorted humanoid avatars explore the future desolate ruins of a smart city, haunted by expired forms of capital extraction, dead malls and warehouses. The project experiments with 3D scanning technologies, motion capture, machine learning agents, and gait detection. Developed in collaboration with Sculptor Rory Young, Choreographer Geoffrey Watson, New Media Artist Sam McGilp and technical artist Mickey Krekelburg.

C4PTCH4 is less interested in genres and more interested in the spaces between them. They are interested in change-making and community building and have found their sound in the underground experimental scene in Naarm. By breaking down the walls between genres, C4PTCHA seeks to create a sonic intersection where community is built through shared, wordless experience. By weaving together an experimental array of genres, they are proving that the most profound conversations happen without saying a single word.

As a multifaceted creative, C4PTCH4 sees the world in a distinctive light; blending reality with the digital realm, amplified by sound. Their selections sonically reflect their unique perception of their environment.
