The Art of Living - presented at The Barbican London, 04.12.25
Performing on the mini-Oramics machine - a drawn sound interface.
Designed by Daphne Oram in the 70s, reimagined and recreated by @mini_oramics Tom Richards in 2016.
This was part of Vari/ations - an Ode or Oram - commissioned by @theoramawards
Produced by @barbicancentre and @nonclsscl
This is a snippet of the piece I created, itself an extended version of the track released on @nonclsscl on limited edition vinyl.
This piece was inspired by reading Oram’s essay: An Individual Note - and particularly chapter 2 where she describes ‘The Art of Living’ She is talking about electronics but also, what it is to be human. For her the subjects are one and the same.
I drew upon Oram’s sound archive but was also very kindly lent this amazing machine by Tom, who also taught me how to use it. It is such a beautiful concept and I felt honoured to play it.
This night was a celebration of Daphne Oram's centenary and featured gorgeous performances from artists including @martasalogni @xnaam and @deena___abdelwahed
From 'An Individual Note'
'In every human being there will be….tremendous chords of wavepatterns 'sounding out their notes'. Do we control them by the formants we build up... by tuned circuits which amplify or filter? Are we forever developing our regions of resonance so that our individual consciousness will rise into being - so that we can assert our individuality? In this way does the tumult of existence resolve itself into a final personal waveshape, the embodiment of all one's own interpretations of the art of living?'

When I was invited to do a residency with the Estuary Festival, I didn’t realise it would open a whole new, and yet deeply resonant perspective for me - The Rights of Nature Movement.
The album I wrote that grew from exploring the Thames Estuary is sonically a departure for me - orchestral, cinematic, classical - but it is me in the truest sense. It is an experiment in how to explore the More Than Human World. What myths can connect to a large audience. What is the vernacular needed to inspire?
I wanted to work mythopoetically. To work from old myths to create new stories about the most pressing need of our times - the climate crisis. I believe we need to recognise personhood in nature. We need to become co-guardians of the natural world around us in order to keep this world for our descendents 7 generations in the future.
Through myth-making, we transform our relationship with water from extraction to intimacy, from pollution to protection. This album is a sonic ritual, a legal framework disguised as folklore, practical magic that turns storytelling into environmental activism. The sound may be different, but the work remains the same: creating the cultural knowledge we need to save what sustains us.
If you are working in these ways, I’d love to hear from you.

Track of the week vibes ✨
Today at PRS Foundation we’re listening to POWER UP music creator @nwando_ebizie ‘Prelude’, from The Myth of Thamesis – The River 🌊
Recorded live at Milton Court, Barbican with @docklands_sinfonia and Junior @guildhallschool musicians, this sweeping piece moves between classical, folk horror and eco-myth – reawakening our connection to water, land and collective action ✨
Commissioned by @estuaryfestival 2025, the project began as immersive sound walks along the Thames Estuary, transforming the landscape’s stories of industry, pollution and resilience into a powerful new river myth 🌊
Stream and buy the full album now on Bandcamp 🎶

So excited and honoured to announce that I won a Paul Hamlyn Composer Award🎉
This comes at such an important time for me - it offers relief and hope. I really want to take a moment, breathe and imagine what could now be possible.
The next 3 years I want to dive into projects exploring The Rights of Nature, dive into the rivers, the seas and the bogs and listen to the call in whatever form it comes.
Thankyou so much to my super talented nominator, the amazing team of judges, the team @paulhamlynfoundation and a massive congrats to my fellow artists winners and nominees - you are all so inspiring to me.

A live performative dialogue between two artists, who will be in conversation alongside each other. The artists are invited to bring their own interests, practice and questions into the space, and will be guided by a score. You are invited to be one of the witnesses of this process and watch how fragments of conversation emerge and disappear.

These Conversations are intended as a choreography of the movement of thought, with the potential for connection, as well as disconnection. They are intended to be non-linear and allow space for interruption and distraction.
✨Meet the artists:
Nwando Ebizie is a constellation point for a spectrum of multidisciplinary works that call for radical change. A British-Nigerian polymath and unclassifiable force in contemporary culture, Ebizie crafts speculative fictions and alternate realities at the crossroads of experimental music, live art, and multi-sensory installation. Her work invites transformation—of perception, of self, of the world.
Stephanie Singer is an award-winning composer, songwriter, creative director, and founder of the pioneering performance company BitterSuite Experiences. Her work fuses classical, pop, and immersive live art to explore the question: what does it mean to be human?
These Conversations have been curated by Nicky Napier (Independent Dance) and Efrosini Protopapa (The Place) and build on their shared interest in performative conversations, revealing processes, lightness of thought and undoing hierarchies of knowledge.

New album out now! ✨The Myth of Thamesis - The River ✨ Nwando Ebizie’s limited edition project with 50 minutes of orchestral music, an aural poem and a book of poetry is now available to buy at our Estuary Festival shop, with music composed by Nwando Ebizie’s and recorded by Docklands Sinfonia and Guidhall Young Artists. 🔗 link in bio.
The album developed from Nwando Ebizie’s commission for Estuary 2025 ‘She is a river’, a live performance held at Tilbury Cruise Terminal on 22 June, and the series of walks ‘A Circular Ritual and Never-ending Ritual of Love to the Thames Estuary’ in Tilbury, Gravesend and Canvey.
The project reimagines the story of the river Thames as Thamesis, a water goddess trapped by human greed and environmental destruction, and calls for ecological urgency and collective action.
