~~~Talk abstract:~~~
Daphne Oram (1925 – 2003, UK) was a pioneering British composer, electronic musician, and the inventor of the Oramics Machine (1966). The Oramics Machine allowed Daphne Oram to synthesize and sequence sound by painting lines and other marks on glass slides and film strips. Oram invented it as a new means of musical expression, one that enabled her to finely control and vary sounds in ways that surpassed the capabilities of audio tape manipulation, which was the primary method of electronic music production at the time.
The initial Oramics Machine was quite large and was permanently installed in Oram’s Kent studio, making it impractical for use by the majority of musicians. Tom Richards has constructed the Mini-Oramics machine (2016) as part of his doctoral studies. The design of this machine is based on Oram's own ideas for a second more portable version of her original invention. In this lecture and demonstration, the story of Oramics will be followed by a hands-on demonstration of Richards’ Mini Oramics interface.
We’re so excited to finally announce the release of a year-long collaborative project with @nonclsscl & The #daphneoramtrust. Celebrating Daphne’s 100th with a compilation of brand new works inspired by her extensive sound archive, which has been distilled into new sample library expertly and lovingly put together by sound artists and archivist’s Sarah Angliss and Ian Stonehouse.
The samples selected are from over 280 audio tapes in Daphne Oram’s archive. Her original tapes, which date from 1956 to 1974, are stored in Special Collections & Archives, Goldsmiths Library, University of London. They feature a mix of sound clips covering not only her innovative Oramics machine and other electronic compositions, but also match strikes, cat purrs, scraped objects and commercial jingles as well as recordings of Oram’s own voice.
It’s amazing to finally see ‘vari/ations - Ode to Oram’ out today. The sounds of Daphne Oram reimagined by ten women and gender-diverse artists each taking a unique perspective to her notes:
@akataahlia, Cosey Fanni Tutti, @martasalogni, @modularprincess, @deena___abdelwahed along side Oram Award artists @hallmagz and @miekoshimizumico, @nwando_ebizie, @xnaam, @loladelamata and @afromerm & @abi.asisa
This group of artists span early-career to high-profile DJs, producers and mixing engineers across diverse electronic worlds, representing a spectrum of distinct practices - from uncompromising club beats, performance art and sound art to ambient and deconstructed future-forward dance music.
Don’t miss our celebrations once again in London at the Barbican on 4 December:
