I both know and deeply don’t fucking know! And I hate branding for this reason cos it’s so fixed and I personally only think I know a few certainties … and one of them is that we change all the fucking time! So branding feels somewhat existentially pointless as an exercise to me. Soz branding experts. Anyhow who am I? Steph!!!! What do I do?? MAKE MUSIC and things that go with music! And basically try to make JOYOUS things about our most chaotic moments. Sometimes by myself and sometimes with others. I write music. I make experiences for music. I dream about massive crazy things happening that hopefully try to make sense of some little pieces of chaos in the world. I am joker. And a human that sits right on the knife edge between despair and joy. It’s quite a ride here ! I care about radical works created by and for women. And I also love stories where we turn our deepest adult wants and needs into the worlds most whimsically and adorable ANTHROPOMORPHIC characters, mainly cos I think adults weirdly listen more to them than each other. I love listening. I love play. And I love people.Curious to a fault. And sometimes get super overwhelmed by the possibilities in the world. I am a “sensory expert” cos I went down a massive rabbit hole in my practice when I created a company of talented MF artists making experiences for music.
But I guess this internet thing only wants to know something really simple. So…

Internet > I am an algorithm designed to keep people addicted to short form content for no particular goal other than duration and financial gain for few.

Anyhow! Thank you so much ROZ!!!! I worked with the most fabulous @rosalindalcazarphotography who got me to try and condense some things about who I am into 40secs. Lemme know how you think I did?

I’m writing a new concept album called VIOLET with my MAIN BRO @s2xs__ — to RAGE, RAVE, RELEASE.
We’re myth-busting sexual violence, whistle-blowing the UK criminal justice system, and offering solace to survivors.

I once wrote a musical about a pair of shoes that ditch their owner ‘cause he never leaves the house - Simon and his shoes.

I founded and lead @bittersuiteuk — a wild, brilliant community making immersive, sensory, music experiences.

I’ve made work for the Royal Opera House, Finnish National Opera, Southbank Centre, Roundhouse — and for my soul, my friends, my family.

My work has been called “disarming and wonderful” by vice.

A next thing I’m doing is a conversational podcast called “Deluded vs Genius”, asking brilliant people:

EEEEEK! Here I am apparently TRANSCENDING 😂as I dj (if we can call it that) for my first VERY soft and very lowkey test of VIOLET.

Violet is My new concept album A labour of love and obsession fostered with my bro @s2xs__ … 4 years in the making and last night I got the chance thanks to @natalie_k_marsland to test out some of the material with an audience at the inaugural HOLD IT DOWN @bardonalondon.
It was JOY!!!

Except for that pesky REVERSE transition I did and forgetting that you gotta press that reverse buttons ….. OFF (hahaha)…. I feel like for 4 dj lessons and 3 weeks … i did pretty good. Shout out to Jacob Harger for the lesson !!!! Amd to @natalie_k_marsland for giving me the heads up the BASS WASNT ON for a few seconds there. Hahahah.

In any case …. It’s only up from here right?

SUPER excited and touched that some of the sister choir showed up to SING ALONG!!!!!!!!!!!!! And thank you to @teevedz for this piccie in FLOW. Hahaha. Back to finishing this body of work so I can finally release it into the world. Not long now tho….. 😘🤗🥰

Ps learning new skills is great! Thank you to everyone who gave me advice about how to learn @kayla_mccl @lilybodoh @auburnjamnikki @slowmotionforall @johannamerceron …. This advice was to help me do this x

Stephanie Singer is a London-based composer and creative director known for intimate, multi-sensory, immersive music blending classical, synth and vocals. Through her company BitterSuite, she creates multisensory gigs & concerts with a brilliant community of artists. Her collaborators include the Royal Opera House, Roundhouse, and BAM. She’s currently finishing her debut concept album VIOLET with her collaborator S2XS, and has a new choral work coming to London THE FRUSTRATION CHOIR.

Imagination: Our Endangered Natural Resource

I’m starting to say that imagination is an endangered natural resource.

Not imagination as escapism, but imagination as infrastructure. As the catalyst. The begining. the birth. The first creative act is to see beyond what is and remind ones self

This is not all there is

This not all that could be.

“To be truly visionary we have to root our imagination in our concrete reality while simultaneously imagining possibilities beyond that reality.”

And right now, our collective imagination is atrophying under the weight of so much doom.

DOOM REHAB

So here’s my idea I don’t want to avoid the truth. I don’t want to numb myself.
But I also don’t want to stay in this cycle of exhausted, cynical paralysis.

I want us off the drip-feed of despair.
I want a rehab for our imaginations.
I want to build a place where we can practice romantic thinking. Fierce dreaming. Delusional optimism, followed by wildly practical steps toward a better world.

Not avoidance. Not denial.

But the kind of vision that allows you to say:

“WHAT THE HELL!!

I SOMETIMES WONDER IF…”
