How do you turn a curse into a blessing? You flip the record.

Witch Prophet’s (Ayo Leilani) two-sided album is a pure manifestation of an artist distilling her sound. Written under the shadow of major brain surgery and a grueling struggle to keep both body and spirit strong, the album serves as a sonic healing ritual. Its title, Words Are Spells, Thoughts Are Magic, is almost an intentional inventory of exactly what you will find within the record’s grooves. Words, spells, thoughts, and magic are gently woven together through echoes of old-school hip-hop, spiritual jazz, R&B, and neo-soul.
The A-Side (Words Are Spells, Tracks 1–5) is produced by Witch Prophet herself, marking the first time she has fully taken the reins as a producer. She quickly sets a sacred tone with the track "Temesgen", which acts as a grounding mantra. In a soft, soulful, honest voice, Leilani sings አምላክ ተመስገን, as a universal prayer of gratitude.

As the record flips to Side B (Thoughts Are Magic, Tracks 6–10), longtime collaborator SUN SUN takes over the production, laying down beats with a shimmering boom-bap grit. The album culminates in a BPM rise, before gently dropping back down into jazz-rap cadence. The entire journey feels covered in a light ነጠላ veil, blurring the lines between family gatherings over buna, an afternoon walk on sun-baked asphalt, a profound moment in the club queue, and a forever spiritual dreamstate.
