Michael got the jump on his Mother’s Day gift by going 2-4 and stealing home in his pink spikes he wore in honor of Mother’s Day weekend. Michael this also a reminder that you still need to go get your mom a ‘real’ gift. And it’s not at CVS.

Today marks Year 3 of BB&CO. A silly idea to go write and tell stories with creative people I admire on brands we all love.

We still don’t have an office, an HR dept, a website, a LinkedIn page, a business plan, a softball team, coffee mugs, stickers or a mascot.

What we have had these last 3 years is work with people I really dig like Derek Jeter, Jason Momoa, Morgan Wallen, Eric Church, Justin Jefferson, Jamar Chase, the Kelce Bros, the Watt Bros, the Super Mario Bros, Terry Crews and the Pillsbury Dough Boy.

I was never spoiled - but one time I was - I made my parents drive from Chicago to Michigan to get me an authentic Michigan Starter jacket - after they got me a knock off one at a secondary type of mall. You know what I’m talking about.

I grew up playing hoops and loving Michigan sports - So I def needed THE real Michigan Starter jacket - not a fake. Good God, it was the Chris Weber Fab Five era - so shit was hard to find. Godless my parents. They found It.

For their effort, let’s beat UCONNs ass tonight.

It’s been 3 years since I left 12 years of Carhartt. But you kind of never leave it once it’s in ya. Spent some time last night with the man who was more than a boss or a mentor - but a dear friend who I can always count on for a cold beer and a little jazz in the background:)

We are born of the Irish. The Parrington Clan on my mother’s side to be specific. From a farm town called Templederry.

Growing up on the southside of Chicago, I found our Irish roots to be our strength and our curse. But study the Irish history long enough and you know our people have been called a savage, an indentured servant and a slave. Many times discriminated and persecuted for our religion, our country, our words and our freedom. We’ve been impoverished by the people who were supposed to protect us. We’ve been forced to bend our knees to kings, queens and presidents. We have been banned from speaking our native tongue in our own country. Why so many of our ancestors fled to America where they were met with: Irish Need Not Apply. Unless it’s to be a cop, a fireman or a soldier. To which my family signed up for all 3. For six generations now dating back to The Civil War. We have many times been a warrior for another man’s war, we have also been caught up in our own wars with each other. We have been called a mick, a paddy, a redneck, a drunk. White trash, lower class, no class. I’ve heard it all. Been called a few.

Whether it was from the Irish Christian Brothers who taught me at Brother Rice H.S. or the songs I’ve heard sung in the Irish bars on Western Avenue - you learn quickly, the Irish can take a punch. And yes, throw a few as well. The moral of the story is the Irish are never quite DEFEATED. ‘Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling.’

The lesson my family taught me is your family sticks together. You work hard without telling everyone how hard you work. You march on with your best intentions at heart. Even when you want to punch each other’s lights out. You move forward. Always. You sing when you’re happy or sad, you write when you have a story to tell, and you shout when you need to stand for something.

Nothing perfect about our Irish footsteps, nothing to cry about either. Because to the Irish, it’s always about passing a better generation on to the next. Whether we get there or not, I’m grateful for the many Irish who showed us the way. And that’s what makes my Guinness taste so good on St. Patrick’s Day. ☘️

A wise Irish man with a pint or two of Guinness in him, once said. ‘When you march for nothin - you stand for nothin.’

Not us. In our a world of chaos, we stand for a good time of togetherness. ☘️

A story about the birthday kids.

Here my mother beautifully stands at around the same age as our Michael turns today: 17.

Two years later my mom would be pregnant with me and raise me as a single mother until Big Mike came along when I was 7. We both won the Big Mike Lottery. But for 7 years before that, it was just her and I. My mom was a waitress at a jazz joint called Chez Joey’s. Willy the cook loved her so much, he had butt steaks and fudge sundaes waiting for me always. I felt rich. I know she didn’t but her laughter lied to me - she preached happiness over doubtfulness. But she would still throw a shoe at ya if you complained too much.

Barb aka Babsie was always working her ass off to put food on the table at our little apartment on the Southside of Chicago.All her tips went to Catholic school, Star Wars Guys and Starter jackets.

It would take me 1,000 years to pay Babs back. Thankfully my wife found a shortcut, and delivered my mom her first grandchild, Michael John Bennett, on her birthday, Feb 28th, 2009.

Now here Michael stands taller than me on the shoulders of her sacrifices - all while stealing his grandma’s best qualities. Her kindness and strength, her love of haaaam and bacon - and best of all, their sly little humor that you better be ready for.

17 and 71. Tied together by a day that has never given me so much. I love you both so much, happy birthday. 🎈
