Ultra Studio
Independant design studio, specialising in CGI, 3D animation and motion design. Founded by @andrewgooch @ultra.andy

JobsWorth is back and on this week’s episode I’m joined by Andy Gooch and Kirsty Williamson of Essex based creative agency, Ultra Studio.
Like so many businesses, Ultra was born out of necessity. A way for Andy to work on one of his first major projects out of university. Little did he know that thirteen years down the line it would have grown into what it is today.
Andy, by his own admission, benefited from having a clear idea of what he wanted to be when he grew up from a relatively young age. Kirsty’s ‘journey’ (a word neither are comfortable with by the way) was a little more…squiggly. And it’s one that a lot of you will be able to relate to.
We talk about university, and whether it’s an essential step to kick start a career in a creative field. We explore how Kirsty and Andy define success and how that’s evolved over the years. We also discuss the impact of becoming parents on their never ending battle for work life balance.
The pair have now worked together for over seven years and in 2024 they decided to add another string to the Ultra Studio bow in the form of their skate inspired clothing brand, Super Ultra Cool.
I ask them what it is about certain types of people that forces them to find more work for themselves and whether they’ve worked out what ‘enough’ looks like for them.
Please enjoy... Andy and Kirsty.

Was your school careers advice actually useful? 🤔
It’s one thing to lack direction and another entirely to know what you want and get nothing more than a shrug of the shoulders in return.
This week, Andy Gooch and Kirsty Williamson of Essex-based motion design agency, Ultra Studio, share how they went from classrooms to running a creative business and the lessons they learned along the way.

What’s your most treasured possession and why?
That’s a tough one. I’ve got a deep love for LEGO, but I’d probably say my Star Wars LEGO X-Wing from when I was a kid. I’ve kept it at the studio — it’s packed with nostalgia and reminds me why I started creating in the first place.
If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
Stephen Fry — hands down. I think he’d be an incredibly interesting dinner guest. Insightful, funny, and full of amazing stories.
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
I’m honestly terrible at karaoke, so I’d need something I already half-know. Probably “What’s Up” by 4 Non Blondes — it’s got that shout-it-out energy I could lean into.
Thanks so much Andy!

Where do you find your creative inspiration most days?
My creativity comes from a mix of curated inspiration in the studio, online references, and those spontaneous lightbulb moments. But my best ideas usually show up during quiet walks along the seafront — stepping away from the noise and giving myself space to think helps everything fall into place.
If you could collaborate with anyone creatively, who would it be?
There are loads of people I’d love to collaborate with — and I’ve already been lucky to work with some incredible creatives. But dream collabs? I’d love to do something with Jon Burgerman, D*Face, or McBess. I’ve always been drawn to their energy and unique visual styles.
