Sword - This painting of a sword I have created in my cartoon style. I have used metallic inks in places to see how it picks up the light especially when you move around the piece. Do you think it worked?

REEL DESCRIPTION
A painting of a cartoon style sword held on a cartoon style gloved hand. Painted on a turquoise background, with metallics inks used on the sword blade and handle, allowing these parts to catch the light as it is observed. A2painted in acrylic.

Blast - This painting is a representation of all the pent up energy I feel. Using my signature cartoon gloved hand style, cradling a ball of energy that is ready to explode. I wanted the colours to compliment the design of the power fist from a few weeks ago, but stand out on its own. Anyway let me know what you think, and if there is anything you would like me to try and draw.

REEL DESCRIPTION:
A painting of a cartoon style hand holding a floating ball of red energy. The energy is blasting out from all sides interacting with the fingers of the hand. Painted in acrylic paints on a background of rich dark green.

Chain - This is my latest piece all about doughnuts something I like to draw regularly and include in my cartoony world of work. This idea came to me in a day dream, and I ran with it. Anyway let me know what you think.

REEL DESCRIPTION:
A painting of a chain of link d doughnuts being swung by a 1930s cartoon style gloved hand. Six different flavour doughnuts drip and swing entangled together, sat over a creamy coffee colours background.

Self - This is my self portrait, kind of, it’s drawing a cartoon style drawing off the cartoons I enjoyed in the 90s as well as taking inspiration from the style of animation from the 1930’s. There are nods to different 90s things on the portrait, all very subtle so I will be very impressed if anyone gets them in the comments.

REEL DESCRIPTION:
A portrait video showing the full process from sketch to finished painting of artwork by Andy Ultra. The artwork depicts a cartoon style self portrait, of Andy wearing a 5 panel cap, with green and red eye, blue hair, and a green top, on a yellow background. The artwork is painted with acrylic paints, and Posca pens. Andy uses the Iris LF from makers cabinet for the initial sketches. Painted onto A2 cartridge paper stock.

Power - this is first of a set of painting I have planned for this year. That I will bring together in as a show later this year. And eventually I will have this framed. If you want to see anything else then let me know in the comments... watch the reel to see its process.
I’m back, painting again after a year off. I took a year out after my third child was born, and I still had the businesses to run. I didn’t have the head space for any painting at that time. Anyway here is the first painting in a series of painting for this year. Hopefully culminating in a show. Stay tuned…

JobsWorth is back and on this week’s episode I’m joined by Andy Gooch and Kirsty Williamson of Essex based creative agency, Ultra Studio.
Like so many businesses, Ultra was born out of necessity. A way for Andy to work on one of his first major projects out of university. Little did he know that thirteen years down the line it would have grown into what it is today.
Andy, by his own admission, benefited from having a clear idea of what he wanted to be when he grew up from a relatively young age. Kirsty’s ‘journey’ (a word neither are comfortable with by the way) was a little more…squiggly. And it’s one that a lot of you will be able to relate to.
We talk about university, and whether it’s an essential step to kick start a career in a creative field. We explore how Kirsty and Andy define success and how that’s evolved over the years. We also discuss the impact of becoming parents on their never ending battle for work life balance.
The pair have now worked together for over seven years and in 2024 they decided to add another string to the Ultra Studio bow in the form of their skate inspired clothing brand, Super Ultra Cool.
I ask them what it is about certain types of people that forces them to find more work for themselves and whether they’ve worked out what ‘enough’ looks like for them.
Please enjoy... Andy and Kirsty.
