Highlight 2 of @indexmediaarts

@stine_deja explores the effects of technological development on human psychology, living conditions, and behavioral patterns. In “GRAVE MATTERS”, the artist offers an existential reflection on grief that is both unsettling and alluring. She invites the viewer to contemplate the threshold between life and death, between biology and technology.

The focus is on the phenomenon of griefbots, a new technology that allows the bereaved to communicate with a digital version of their loved one through artificial intelligence. One does not enter a church, but a simulated temple, where the chirping of birds, organ music, and other customary signs of worship create a Zen-like atmosphere, reminiscent of a wellness retreat.

The viewer is invited to open the coffins, encountering stoic yet smiling faces, with eyes that seem to convey humanity. These griefbots appear trapped in a loop where eternal life is merely simulated, and they can be turned off at any moment. In this unsettling experience, the artist invites visitors to consider: can the eternal exist in a future scenario like this?

Stine Deja’s GRAVE MATTERS is part of POWER exhibition, curated by @joelvalabrega

This exhibition at @forumartebraga continues until May 30th.

A standout from INDEX, Biennial of Art and Technology 2026 is Silent by @pauline_yavor & Renate Lorenz, currently being exhibited at @muzeu.pac

Pauline Boudry (b. 1972, Switzerland) and Renate Lorenz (b. 1963, Germany) have been working together in Berlin since 2007. They create installations that choreograph the tension between visibility and opacity. Their films capture performances in front of the camera, often beginning with a song, an image, a film, or a score from the recent past.
Silence has been described both as a violent experience (in the case of being silenced) and as a powerful act of performance and resistance, as has been carried out by various civil disobedience movements around the world. “Silent” questions how these two moments can be interconnected.
The piece begins with a performance of the 1952 score “4´33´´” by modern composer John Cage, which instructs the performer(s) not to play their instrument(s) for the entire duration of its three parts. The artist Aérea Negrot performs the score on a rotating stage set up in Oranienplatz, a public square in Berlin where a refugee protest camp was held between 2012 and 2014. In the second part of the film, she performs a song composed specifically for the film.

The exhibition is part of @indexmediaarts, curated by @joelvalabrega, and is showing until 17th May.

Here are the first names confirmed for @semibreve 2026.

From October 22 to 25, the historic city of Braga will host @_fennesz & @oscarjockel (performing live together for the second time), @sam.slater.music & Guests, @qasimnaqviofficial & @stevenwendt (world premiere), @noemibuchi, @malcolmpardon & @gustafbroms2 (world premiere), @tygapaw, @azu.tiwaline, and @joao_carlos_pinto (world premiere).

The programme moves through carefully selected locations across the city, reflecting a dialogue between past and present, from the ornate surroundings of Theatro Circo to the contemporary arts centre gnration, and the intimate setting of Capela Imaculada. Each site shapes how the work is encountered, inviting audiences to be fully present while reinforcing a strong sense of place.

This year’s edition brings together performances, exhibitions, talks, cinema and workshops in a programme that moves fluidly between disciplines. Semibreve has long supported innovative artists working across music, visual art and technology, particularly those exploring audiovisual composition, spatial sound and emerging digital practices. The focus remains on work that is exploratory, but maintaining a clear and sustained focus on quality across the programme as a whole.

Now in its 16th year, Semibreve continues to provide a carefully structured environment for artists to present ambitious work, and for audiences to encounter it with curiosity, clarity and focus.

INDEX – Biennial of Art and Technology (@indexmediaarts) returns to Braga, Portugal, from 7–17 May 2026, with a new exhibition curated by @joelvalabrega that brings together leading voices in contemporary art to examine the shifting architectures of power in a technologically mediated world.

Working across exhibition, performance, discourse and education, INDEX 2026: Art and Technology responds to a moment defined by technological acceleration and its entanglement with political fragmentation, economic disparity and expanding regimes of surveillance.

Valabrega’s exhibition, conceived as the central visual arts programme of the biennial, approaches “power” not as a fixed category but as a diffuse, unstable condition- one that circulates through images, systems and bodies alike.

Valabrega, curator of the Luxembourg Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale (2024) and former Curator of Performance and Moving Image at Mudam Luxembourg, brings together artists whose practices interrogate authority, control and their cultural imaginaries. The exhibition includes works by Hito Steyerl, Gabriel Abrantes , Pauline Boudry & Renate Lorenz, Cemile Sahin, Shuang Li, P. Staff, Jonna Kina, Stine Deja, Mira M. Yang and Bod Mellor, alongside a presentation by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Raven Chacon, whose work Storm Pattern addresses drone surveillance in Native American communities.

INDEX is an initiative of @bragamediaarts and forms part of the city’s ongoing work as a UNESCO Creative Cities Network of Media Arts. Now in its third edition, the biennial has been developing into a focused platform for artists and thinkers working across art, technology and digital culture, with an emphasis on critical engagement.

@rebeccasalvadori’s new film, Not Running, moves her practice into a more performative and spatial space.

Filmed at Lee Valley Athletics Centre in North London, it brings together runners, musicians and artists to look at how sound and light shape the experience of running — physically and mentally. It shifts between immersive audiovisual moments and quieter, more durational scenes, reflecting on how exertion, sound and light can alter our sense of time and self.

The project brings together a range of collaborators, including, composer @sandromussida and lighting artist @c.h.a.r.l.i.e.h.o.p.e, with performances by @cobysey, @oliviasalvadori and @akihide_monna (@gaister___ ).

Photographer @gomezdevillaboa beautifully documents the process in a series of images capturing the relationship between movement, light and performance.

The wonderful @claire_s_ attended festival @semibreve for our 15th edition. Read her reflections in the latest issue of @thewiremagazine.

“Semibreve is rightly revered by its audiences and artists. It’s a festival that knows the subtle art of layering old with new, the unseen with the magical.” Claire Sawers

KIK featured in @clashmagazine. “New project KIK represents a break with the past. Moving away from acoustic instruments towards electronic percussion, the tightly-wound sound design enriches each piece with an intense sense of atmospherics...Rich in detail, ‘NIGHTSHIFT’ conjures a full audio spectrum.

Out now on @horror_vector, the debut album by Jonathan Uliel Saldanha and João Pais Filipe, under the guise KIK, has continued to pick up support from the likes of @thequietus, @thewiremagazine, @djmagofficial, @metal_magazine, and @resident_advisor

@thequietus review of Nightshift, the debut album from @jonathan.uliel.saldanha and @joao_pais_filipe under their new project KIK.

“The Portuguese duo deliver unsettling, off-kilter, and percussion heavy tracks on their full-length debut, an album which mesmerises the listener into a trance-like state through primordial drum automation and elementary synths”

Nightshift is out 28th November on @horror_vector, available on 12-inch vinyl and digital.
