Huge news for @acenturyinsound. This is the result of a huge amount of work from the bro @nickdwyernz. If you know Nick, you’ll know how dedicated he has been to the success of this project over the past ten years. I’ve been honoured to be a part of it along the way.

We are beyond excited to announce that A CENTURY IN SOUND has been invited to have its Australasian premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival screening at the The Capitol theatre on the 18 August and the Kino theatre on the 20th August.

In the words of the festival :

“Slip into the serene surrounds of Japanese ‘listening cafés’, where music lovers, audiophiles and locals come together to hear records.

Ongaku Kissa are some of Japan’s greatest cultural hubs; within these settings, people from differing walks of life congregate to relax, indulge and take in music in a collective setting. They are often institutions, like the Meikyoku Kissa Lion, a 100-year-old classical music café in Shibuya. As its title suggests, the limited series A Century in Sound chronicles the history of music in the country through the prism of these spaces, from their social importance as gathering places in postwar times to how they heralded the arrival and influence of Western culture during the second half of the 20th century.

Much like MIFF 2021 favourite Come Back Anytime, this loving, endearing portrait from New Zealand filmmakers Tu Neill and Nick Dwyer – who previously made Diggin’ in the Carts, a 2014 documentary series about Japanese videogame music – transports audiences to the world of a uniquely Japanese phenomenon. Fresh off its premiere at CPH:DOX, MIFF will screen three instalments of A Century in Sound as a single program; the trio of episodes will profile cafés spinning classical, jazz and J-rock records, respectively.”

Tickets available through the @melbfilmfest site from Tuesday 16th July.

Really looking forward to seeing so many old (and new) friends there.

If you know someone in Melbourne or the surrounding areas who might be interested then please feel free to tag them here!

Hard to express how happy I am to announce that our series, “A Century in Sound” will be premiering @cphdox in a little under 2 weeks.

For those of you who know, this has been a labour of love that has stretched over 8 years and has been kept alive by some of the best to do it. None more so than the man who conceived the project and without whose tireless grit and determination got us to where we are today @nickdwyernz. That’s a very long story for another time tho. The other main guy who has been there from start to finish is our dear friend and master dop @tim_flower who stuck with us patiently over all this time. Alongside us was a huge network of incredibly talented crew who I will name in full over the coming weeks but without whom we would have been stuffed. They all worked tirelessly to make an incredible series of films.

Obviously there’d be no series without the generosity of all our contributors in allowing us into their spaces and their lives. It is an honour to be able to share their stories.

Along the way there have also been a number of really important people who have helped keep this project alive. Most recently a huge thank you to @mappasun Kasper Colin and Dana O’Keefe for getting us to this point.

Also just want to give a shoutout to all my friends and family who have supported me through these last 8 years. You know who you are and without your caring words and endless optimism I’m not sure I’d have gotten to the finish.

Cant wait to be able to share the full series with you all xx
