What would it look like to repair what racism stole—starting with one block? That's exactly what I’m doing on Chicago’s South Side—in #Englewood, at 65th & Aberdeen in Alderman @stephaniedcoleman’s 16th Ward!

Redlining and land sale contracts stole wealth from Black families on this block. Now I’m repairing it—one home at a time.

1950s–60s Chicago: Black families were locked out of mortgages
and pushed into predatory contracts.

They paid for homes they didn’t own—
while white investors made no repairs
and let them fall apart.

That theft still shows up today
in Black neighborhoods—
in disinvestment,
in the condition of homes,
in blocks like this.

So I’m doing something about it.

Through my @unblockedenglewood project, I’m repairing homes, transferring land to residents,
and investing directly into the people who stayed.

New roofs. New porches. New systems.
Vacant lots becoming community-owned. An abandoned home becoming a future for a young Black family.

This is what repair looks like.
Not displacement. Not gentrification.
Restoration.

Aspiring Black homeowners in #Chicago
weren’t sold homes—
they were sold land sale contracts
in the 1950s and 60s.

No mortgage.
No equity.
No protection.

Miss one payment—
and everything they paid was gone.

Billions (in today’s dollars) were stolen from Black families.

That theft didn’t disappear—
it shows up today
in how Black neighborhoods on Chicago’s South and West Sides
look—and are still disinvested in.

This wasn’t by accident.
It was by design.

Don’t say you’re a Chicagoan and stay silent when people say, ‘Don’t go to the South or West Sides because it’s bad!

My first-ever book, Don’t Go: Stories of Segregation and How to Disrupt It, co-written with Dr. @mariakrysan, shares essays of everyday Chicagoans—those who’ve ignored the warnings to stay away from ‘don’t go’ neighborhoods and those who live in these very same neighborhoods.

So join us at @bronzevillewinery to celebrate the launch of this book and discuss how harmful and racist it is to tell people #Don’tGo to the #SouthSide. Maria and I will be joined by @6figga_dilla and @bpopetv for an inspiring conversation—paired with @moorsbeer and light bites.

NEW — Social justice artist and MacArthur Fellow Tonika Lewis Johnson stopped by The TRiiBE Studio in Chicago to talk about her latest project, UnBlocked Englewood, an arts-driven beautification project providing home repairs on blocks directly impacted by predatory housing practices.

UnBlocked Englewood is Johnson’s innovative idea to help solve years of disinvestment on the 6500 block of South Aberdeen Street — less than a mile away from where she grew up on Chicago’s South Side.

“We don’t have to wait on policy. We don’t have to wait on a president. We don’t have to wait on reparations, and we haven’t,” Johnson said. “Because of this project, especially since it’s been going on for a few years, we can now say that these specific types of homes need this amount of money to do these specific repairs — repairs that the majority of people in Black disinvested neighborhoods need help to do. So after this project is complete, we can say, ‘Oh, if you want to actually help stabilize one block, you need this amount of money.’”

I know you’ve heard it—or maybe even been told: “Don’t go to Chicago’s South Side… it’s dangerous.”

In late 2024, I published a book called Don’t Go with Dr. @mariakrysan—made up of essays from interviews with Chicagoans and transplants who question that advice and realize how rooted in racism it really is.

Since the book debuted, even more people have been inspired to share their own stories with us. So of course, we kept going.

Maria and my longtime project partner, multimedia artist and audio engineer @kingrobsmooth , have been recording these stories. Now @kingrobsmooth has turned one of them into an animation for us to experience in a whole new way.

Stay tuned… more to come.

If you own a home in Chicago… watch this! I wasn’t receiving my homeowner exemptions for 3 YEARS
and didn’t even know it.

I went downtown to the @cookcountyassessor office, filed a Certificate of Error, and got it handled.

Apply for your property tax exemptions NOW at the link in bio or this website👇🏾
https://www.cookcountyassessoril.gov/exemptions

• Click the link
• Find your property
• Apply for exemptions you qualify for (Homeowner, Senior, etc.)
•HIT SUBMIT

And if you missed previous years, ask about a Certificate of Error (up to 3 years back 👀)

This is the kind of information we need to be sharing with each other.

Don’t leave money on the table.

Meet Tonika Lewis Johnson, a photographer, social justice artist, and 2025 #MacFellow exposing the impacts of systematic disinvestment in urban communities.

Johnson uses photography, maps, and multimedia storytelling to articulate the vast disparities in conditions, infrastructure, and investment between Chicago’s neighborhoods. At the same time, she creates pathways for residents to begin the process of restitution and repair.

How did you all feel about these questions? These interview questions about Don't Go Book are getting to the root of the issue—how historic racism has shaped perception, policy, and disinvestment in Black Chicago neighborhoods. This is exactly why we need to have these conversations publicly. Watch the interview and let’s keep the dialogue going. ✊🏾 #UnpackingNarratives #DontGoBook #FoldedMap

🚫 "Don’t Go to Chicago’s South Side!" But… why not?

On @wttwchicago @chicagotonight with @brandisfriedman , I broke down why this isn’t just harmless advice—it’s a racist narrative that reinforces segregation, fear, and disinvestment.

My first book, Don't Go: Stories of Segregation and How to Disrupt It, co-authored with @mariakrysan shares real stories from Chicagoans who were told don’t go—and what happens when they challenge that mindset. Thank you to @timo1110 @ponnopozz @jerryckaufman for sharing your truths with the world! Tap the link in my bio to watch the full interview.

Niggas in Paris has a whole new meaning for me! Thanks to my two-month artist residency in Paris, I now know that Black French people and Black people from United States have a unique bond that’s been hidden from us:
We are both a demographic of people from countries that are rich and have a deep history of slavery and colonization. We have a relationship with our country that no one else can really understand. And I can’t thank @osainvichi @enzocosy @kop3to @wangnour and @westsiderasta enough for helping enlighten me to this fact and sharing their profound insight with me! All of this was made possible from my nearly 14yr friendship with my dear French sister @seyli.hopes_love.signature! ❤️
