That’s right. A century. In the process of writing and releasing my new book @TheTrueArtifact, I got to learn so much about myself. One of the things I’ve always struggled with is my relationship with my dad — primarily because he was not in my life until I was 20.

My family comes from the crime-ridden streets of Detroit, and before that, the post-slavery South. The men in my line are a direct product of those environments. The dealers and the users. The killers and the killed.

The fact that I’m even here is a miracle.

Part of getting to know myself is understanding where I come from so that I can connect with that legacy. Learning about the fathers who preceded me, the ones who were stuck in the void, I gained a lot of empathy for the choices they made — not to excuse them — but to integrate those decisions, realize that they ultimately led to the opportunities I have now and decide that the legacy of suffering stops here.

The hardest part about doing meaningful work is that you will encounter resistance. The urge to quit will be so tempting at times! In fits of frustration, your brain will populate with logical reasons why quitting this project and starting a new one will be more fun and less difficult.

See it through.
