📣“A package has arrived for you from Greece“

The delivery man shouted in a lively voice over the intercom.
I hastily sign and receive the beautiful cardboard box and the loud employee disappears into the rain.

In Zurich , March is a cold month . The Alps are snow-covered and the lake still has that darkness of Winter.

I caress the small armlet made of white and red thread that I have on my hand. It is an ancient custom that we have in Greece. The bracelet with the name “Martaki” (small March) protects our skin from the first sunny days of Spring. Of course, here I am not in such danger.But it is one of the few customs that i still keep .

As I open the box with the wonderful bottles of wine from Naxos island , I think of my grandmother. When we were little, she would put me and my sister under the first blooming almond tree and wear our „martaki“ to us .
The fragranceof the Spring flowers mixed with the smells from her stone oven that was always baking something there. Α walnutcake or a sourdough bread ..maybe a rich pie. Depending always on the season.
Myronia, a wild herb that you find in the area of the Peloponnese(one of the most famous tips of French cuisine)was the main ingredient for our favorite “herb pie”.

I decided to make this “treat” when I opened the wine even though I had never made dough in my life. Of course Idid it with spinach, leeks, onions, Greek feta cheese and “trahana” (a sheep’s milk pasta from mountainous Arcadia). When it was in the final stage of baking, I broke an egg on top. My grandmother used to add more to balance the herbs & the onions and give it a creamy texture.
The dessert at the end ..a pomegranate and cinnamon cream is the ultimate indulgence

We pour the cool “Assyrtiko”into glasses. We divide the hot pie into pieces.
We laugh.
We remember.
We cheer.
We travel mentally to Naxos, to Nafplio in Argolis.
We turn Zurich into a Mediterranean city.
We clink our glasses and the rain disappears.
We put on some records and sing old songs.
My grandmother beckons to me from afar..
She raises her glass slightly and tells me something I can’t hear..

I feel happy…

The Easter holidays are approaching and the festive Easter tables are being organized to accommodate our loved ones.
We dedicate to you … a wonderful poem written by the great Chilean poet Pablo Neruda: “Ode To Wine”

Day-colored wine,
night-colored wine,
wine with purple feet
or wine with topaz blood,
wine,
starry child
of earth,
wine, smooth
as a golden sword,
soft
as lascivious velvet,
wine, spiral-seashelled
and full of wonder,
amorous,
marine;
never has one goblet contained you,
one song, one man,
you are choral, gregarious,
at the least, you must be shared.
At times
you feed on mortal
memories;
your wave carries us
from tomb to tomb,
stonecutter of icy sepulchers,
and we weep
transitory tears;
your
glorious
spring dress
is different,
blood rises through the shoots,
wind incites the day,
nothing is left
of your immutable soul.
Wine
stirs the spring, happiness

A jug of wine, and thou beside me
in the wilderness,
sang the ancient poet.
Let the wine pitcher
add to the kiss of love its own.

My darling, suddenly
the line of your hip
becomes the brimming curve
of the wine goblet,
your breast is the grape cluster,
your nipples are the grapes,
the gleam of spirits lights your hair,
and your navel is a chaste seal
stamped on the vessel of your belly,
your love an inexhaustible
cascade of wine,
light that illuminates my senses,
the earthly splendor of life.

But you are more than love,
the fiery kiss,
the heat of fire,
more than the wine of life;
you are
the community of man,
translucency,
chorus of discipline,
abundance of flowers.
I like on the table,
when we’re speaking,
the light of a bottle
of intelligent wine.
Drink it,
and remember in every
drop of gold,
in every topaz glass,
in every purple ladle,
that autumn labored
to fill the vessel with wine;
and in the ritual of his office,
let the simple man remember
to think of the soil and of his duty,
to propagate the canticle of the wine.
